3e and the Test of Time

I think the "lack-o-flavor" in 3e goes back to 2e. Cook hurt the core books and made them BORING for 2nd ed. I think WotC wanted and has more flavor with 3e core books, in part due to the art etc than the 2nd ed stuff. However, I think WotC didn't want to "season" the materials too much. As...

3e and the Test of Time

I follow what your saying. I did the same with 2nd ed stuff and used it on the fly in my 1st ed game. The changes in 1st and 2nd were minimal as the games were 90 to 95 percent the same - at least at first. This also seems to be true with 3.0 and 3.5 ~90 to 95 percent the same, so I think the...

    Your first character

1st character rolled up was a 1/2ling thief that I never played. He was passed off to another player that wanted to play a 1/2ling thief with a good dex. He was killed permantely in the Tomb of Horrors. 1st character I actually played, was Celeste Lorelli a human Illustionist back in 1980, in...

3e and the Test of Time

One idea that could be made to a "4e" would be to drop the class system and go to a complete skill based system. This would throw much of the 3e and 3.5e stuff out the window and require those that wanted to stay current to buy new books. :D Instead of classes, your could tailor you PC however...

    Wanted: Rat Bastard Beholder tricks

With Beholders, I like to throw in a 1st ed AD&D critter called as Gas Spore. I don't know if it has a 3e counter part. IIRC Basically a Gas Spore look and acts like a Beholder, but only has 1hp. When hit in combat it explodes for 6d6 worth of damage in a ~10 to 15 ft radius. Save for 1/2...

Help! My GM's trying to get me pregnant!

1st ed AD&D, we always allowed a visit to the local druid to take care of the issue. As we house ruled, druids had access to a 1st level BC spell. The spell was permante until dispelled. I would think this would work in 3e too if the DM was ok with it.

3e and the Test of Time

3e and the test of time? 3e lasted four years before being supersecded by 3.5 1st ed AD&D lasted over ten years before being superceded by 2nd ed AD&D which also lasted around ten years. 3e has already failed the test of time, compared to it's forerunners. 3e is OOP just like 1st ed AD&D. I...

    D&D 4E When will 4E appear?

3.5 came out in 2004 So four years between the 3.0 and 3.5 books. When the sales of 3.5 stuff slack off and new holes in the 3.5 system are found, 4.0 will be around the corner. I would guess 2008 + or 1 one year I agree late 2nd AD&D was garbage and 3e is better, but 1st ed AD&D house ruled...

    Are you a killer DM?

Understood. I copied the 10% stablize in the neg's even without someone attending the wounded etc. Death is at -11 hp as I house rule -10 serious injury just short of death. Yet, of the six deaths... 1-PC elf tried on the pretty magical necklace because it matched her outfit in the dungeon...

    Are you a killer DM?

I've been told I'll get flamed for mentioning 1st ed AD&D on this forum but I think the topic transends the flavor of choice for playing D&D. While I DM a 1st ed AD&D game, it is very similar to a 3e game that I play in regarding death. The dice fall where they may. The DM will not save players...

GREYHAWK: history of psionics started there?

EGG's Greyhawk started before the psionic rules were introducted, I think. EGG didn't really want to include the psionic rules as written in the PHB but Brian Blume insisted should be in the PHB. So EGG was persuaded to include them as they are. One of the older supplaments before the PHB may...

Is the RPG Industry on Life Support? (Merged w/"Nothing Dies")

My .02 on this... I started playing back in 1980 when I was 16 as did most of my friends. We all stayed with AD&D 1st ed until into our mid-twenties after college. A few of us stayed with the game until about 30 but took a break from it as marriages, careers etc took away the free time. Now at...

Why _DON'T_ You Buy Dragon Magazine?

I say this as a gamer that still plays and DM's 1st ed AD&D and as player of 3E. Back in the early 80's, Dragon Magazine still had something to offer. The best issues are ~30 to ~80 and some are still decent into the low 100's. Friend of mine has every issue some ~35 to ~240 something or when...

How many female gamers in your group?

Four of Nine. Three came to game by choice. One because her mother (one of the three) thought it would be fun for her ten year old daughter to play. As DM I'm happy that all four play as they bring an excellent dynamic to the game.

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

A question about the 1st ed AD&D or OAD&D Sleep spell Gary, In early 1980's when my group started playing 1st ed AD&D or as you say OAD&D, we had the following question come up based on the way the sleep spell is worded. We were unsure of how the spell was intended to work. We scoured the...

Women Gamers vs. PCs/DMs Significant Others

In my current group of nine there are four female players. All the females came to the game out of interest, not because of SO's.
