A wiz(z)ard 3rd level called "Gagamel der Kroetenwandler"

He died because of seeing a undressed nymph which said: "close your eyes"
He answered "One eye I will risk!"

Mine was a halfling named Pippin (another not-very-original 9-year-old, who'd just finished reading LotR). First adventure was "Creature of the Rhyll" from an early Dragon magazine. I've still got his character sheet around, somewhere ... retired around 4th level, IIRC when I switched to AD&D.

My younger sister played a dwarf named "Dorf". :)

1983. Basic D&D (box with dragon fighting a male and a female; sample character was Morgan Ironwolf [I don't know the artists or writers]).
Magic-User named Gandalf. (I was 10.)

Killed by the minotaur in Keep on the Borderlanders.

The next two characters I created that day met the exact same fate.

Finally, I got the hint and my fourth character (a fighter, I think) chose Minotaur as his second language and talked his way out of the minotaur's lair. :)

Wow, I don't even remember my first 3e character for sure, much less my first character ever. That was a long time ago! :)

I think my first 3e character was a female half-orc ranger. Although I can't remember her name or much about her. She didn't last long. ;)

Keep on the Borderlands. Cleric. First action: fell in the pit in one of the openings.

10 or so years later - playing Keep on the Borderlands with same people as a nostalgia thing. Fell in the same pit...

Cool stuff ;)

Ah, the memories. It was in the last days of 2nd Ed., and I went to this guy's house to play the game I grew up thinking was the Devil's work. This guy and his wife worked for RPGA, and he helped me build my first character, Elithir the elven bladesinger-in-training, because the DM didn't allow bladesingers. The RPGA guy (Lee, I think his name was) talked the DM into letting me multiclass a Ftr-MU.

Since I didn't know any rules at all, I trusted Lee to build my character for me. All I remember from that mess of random numbers and notes is that I had a Strength of 18/35, which Lee told me was pretty okay.

I remember how after playing one session I became hooked. The game was terribly exciting, and I loved playing my character, even though he died three times in the second session (I started at level one, while there was [I think] a level 18 psionic priestess in the group). Most of the metagame discussion was speculation about the upcoming "Third Edition" that the RPGA guy was beta-testing. And a good time was had by all.

My first character was made in 1997 my uncle DMed. OD&D red box an elf named Link wasted his only spell magic missle on a carrion crawler. Don't know what happened to him it was a one shot. My second character was an Elf Ranger also named Link he died after a series of bad shots from a bow.

1st character rolled up was a 1/2ling thief that I never played. He was passed off to another player that wanted to play a 1/2ling thief with a good dex. He was killed permantely in the Tomb of Horrors.

1st character I actually played, was Celeste Lorelli a human Illustionist back in 1980, in 1st ed AD&D. She saw the 1/2ling get it in ToH. She survived that and many other adventures to eventually retire as a 38th level Illusionist.

Out of the orginal party we rolled up. Celeste (38th Illusionist), Warlon (30th Magic User), Pope Pious (29th Cleric) survived to retirement, the other seven were killed off permantely along the way. These were also the highest level characters we ever played. We gained a better undestanding of the game and how it was supposed to work.
