    The problem of sundering

Moreover, replacing a holy symbol or spell book is relatively cheap compared to replacing a magic weapon, putting the already beleaguered fighter who's up front soaking the attacks at even more of a disadvantage compared to the other classes.

    The problem of sundering

I think if you are going to tell the fighter to suck it up, you better share the hate around to the wizards, clerics, and druids -- perhaps create some monsters that permanently destroy rings, wands, and wondrous items, or maybe just permanently destroy spell slots... Otherwise, next week you...

Sharing the book, though, is legal. Also, there's decreased utility in sharing the book, whereas "sharing" a file isn't really sharing at all -- it's making a copy and distributing it, like photocopying a book and giving that to your friends. However, you could truly share an app like Hero Lab...

    HeroLab

It didn't feel like jumping through hoops to me. I downloaded the software, put in the code, then it connected to the internet to activate and check for updates. Since I needed to be connected to the internet anyway to download the software and get the email with the key, that extra step...

    Stat the A-Team

One thing I liked about d20 Modern was that the base classes seemed to all be inspired by the A-Team. :D

    Turn Based Strategy?

It looks like the demo's available for the PC, but not the game. Is that true? Seems a little odd.

    What's your group's AYCW?

If you exclude me, the six players in my group bought a grand total of three PHBs (3.0) back in 2002 or so, probably at $30 each -- making their yearly purchases average out to 3 bucks. I wonder why WotC is going more towards miniatures? :D

    HeroLab

With the recent addition of templates and monstrous races Hero Lab is something I'll start to give some real consideration to. One thing I like is that I can enter data either via the in-game editor, or via XML files, so I'll have to see how well it handles my Second World Sourcebook stuff.

I'd think for them that the D&D logo isn't as valuable as the Dungeon and Dragon logos and brand loyalty. The best test would be looking at the sales of Kenzer & Co. D&D branded books versus the sales for similar, merely d20 branded books at the time. I suspect that it was a strong initial...

What a vibrant discussion for a "removed" thread! The license fee for the logo would seem reasonable, though I'm not sure how many takers there would be. Still, we had something like that already with Kenzer and Co's D&D branded books. Generally I thought they were solid, and I thought that...

Mearls says adventures are hard to sell [merged]

I'm not sure that a module in the early days of 3e is a good example. Everything was gangbusters back then. I think "The Foundation, a World in Black and White" sold in numbers that exceed the sales of entire d20 companies.

I really couldn't disagree more. If that had happened in 3e how many of Ronin Arts, Malhavoc, Green Ronin, Adamant Entertainment, Goodman Games, Necromancer Games, Fiery Dragon, RPGObjects, and so on would have existed? Is it really that easy to toss away 3k on a venture that you're not at...

In the past, vague and unclear declarations have been implemented specifically to prevent use of the open content -- and, really, is one of the best ways to do so since the publisher can always hold a threat over anyone by interpreting harshly, or back off by interpreting softly. That said...

The concern is that a rule description isn't a game statistic. And does the name of a feat, class or ability count as a game statistic or a description? Statistics are typically numbers.

    PC Gen data sets

Honestly, the case for fair use would have been incredibly thin -- even if the PCGEN volunteers somehow had enough money or were composed entirely of Ivy League Law School grads, they'd have an uphill battle arguing that PCGEN data files were "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching...

Andy Collins: "Most Magic Items in D&D Are Awful"

I do pretty much allow my players to head back to Ptolus and do a little Wal-marting of magic items (at least those in the main books). I figure the item sets you give your character are part of the fun of building a character. Regardless, I think pointing to the magic item marketplace as being...

    PC Gen data sets

I would think that the verbosity would only be a slowdown on initial loading of the dataset -- and that after it was parsed into whatever internal format they use there wouldn't be an issue. In fact, that's the way Hero Lab apparently handles it -- except what it does is you put together an XML...

    Maths errors in RPGs

I think D&D books are going to show more errors because there's more going on in the average stat block and it's harder to fudge. For Shadowrun or World of Darkness you won't know how many xp a character has (and perhaps the character wasn't built on xp at all) so you can't say whether or not...

For me, more significantly than templates, it doesn't handle monsters yet. Neither does RPGXplorer. Metacreator, DM Genie, and PCGEN do handle monsters and templates. I've been planning on putting together a comparison of all the character creators I own and posting it here to the boards.
