Chicago Gameday X: the awesome aftermath

See, now I will vote. Seeing this is Chicago, I guess we should spend a moment speaking about the "benefits" of voting for you :p Had a great time in both games. Matt's game was a traditional pirate treasure hunt, with a jaunt through the jungle which included being swarmed by piranah and...

    Dice at the table

I bring one of Paladins dice bags that holds 4+ sets. I pull out the dice I need for my character's abilities and put the rest back in the bag and place it off the table. If I DM, I have 2-3 full sets out. Where we game now, we are tight on space so extra dice just get in the way.

    Homebrew- what do players need?

My question comes down to, what backgroud info do you provide players to give them a better feel of your homebrew? OK, I am in the early stages of putting together a "homebrew" D20 game together that will be set in Roma. I am currently researching what specific area I want to start in. I am...

Chicago Gameday X: the awesome aftermath

Is it too early to advertise for Gameday XI? I won a bid on EBAY for 5 worthless, I mean wonderful RPGs. I only wanted one of the books and would love to enrich your lives by donating these well known highly successful games to the next gameday. I will not have them in time for Gameday X :(...

    Thundercats Ho!!

Yep, I loved this cartoon, but I think I will leave it in my past. I have found many cartoon favs don't translate well over time for me. I am still having night mares from an episode of Super Friends I saw a few months back.

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

    - speaking about eliminating low level magic items In almost every game I played, the PCs have been 30-32 pt buy or rolld 4d6 reroll 1's. In each case the PCs are significantly more powerful than the 25 pt buy characters the game was balanced with. So if you are using heroic stats, it is like...

What's the most broken PC you've ever seen?

For me personally, it was a PC who used a ghost template in a low level game. Having to deal with him turning Incorporeal at will was nealry impossible to deal with.

    Anyone use Brookhurst Hobbies?

I used them several times before I knew of Games-Plus, my somewhat LGS. Brookstone offered excellent service, good communication and timely delivery. They have a phone number and answer your calls, so if you have questions or concerns, you get answers.

    Are knowledge skills worth it?

Actually, I don't think there is a huge concensus. Yes we all like using knowledge, my beef is 10 different knowledge skills is too diverse and would be better served by lowering the number of availble knowledge skills from 10 to 4-5. 1. Arcana/psionic/magic 2. Religion 3. Nature 4. Lore...

Strength.. Is it really the best statistic?

You have it backwards for halflings and gnomes. They get a stat bonus with no negative to a stat. The -2 to Str is a size penalty and both races get the benefit of the small size, so that balances. What is the neg they take on for their stat bonus? Both halflings and gnomes should get -2 to...

    Are knowledge skills worth it?

I agree that knowledge skills are very important, but I find that with all of the knowledge skills and the narrow focuses they cover it is difficult to create a sage style character or a character with a well rounded education. I spend a lot of points on knowledge because they usually fit my...

    Are knowledge skills worth it?

IMO, the current Knowledge skills are way too specific. On average you have to spend too many points to be even consistantly hitting DC 15 knowledge checks. With the skills covering such narrow facets, you could spend 20 skill points across 5 knowledge skills and still have low knowledge...

Chicago Gameday X: the awesome aftermath

I know last time people talked about bringing their WotC miniatures for trading. I am looking for a bulette and am willing to trade a Nightstalker and Treant for it.

    Powerful people vs high-level characters

Many leaders have gone through years of formal education in diplomacy, combat, several knowledge fields etc. You also have to remember D&D is a fantasy world and the same laws of reason do not exist there. I would think that royalty is shrouded in protective magical items, otherwise a single...

Chicago Gameday X: the awesome aftermath

Hey Jon, Do you mind if I paint during the lunch break? (that is if my morning game does not go long). It is usually not a problem for me because I am so consistantly awesome at rolling low, especially when it counts.

    What is your exercise regime?

You notice you really put on the weight after college. I think it has some to do with age, but mostly with activity. You walk a crapload in your life through college, but once you graduate, you don't even know what walking is. In the Army we would walk 2 miles to the PX and back without...

    Use Rope Useless?

Use rope exists because the creators of D&D could come up with no other way to use/execure the skill Escape Artist. It is getting nit picky. If you consider a standard 25 point buy character and the skill points the typical character would get, it is crazy to have so many skills. With the...
