Dice at the table

How many dice do you have at hand when gaming?

I either have only one of each size (d4, d6, d8, d%, d12, d20), or usually just what I will regularly need (like 2d6 and a d20 for my greatsword-wielding paladin), with the others within easy/quick access (like a shirt pocket). As DM, I have the full set (7 dice) in front of me.

(This is not to say suggest I don't *own* a lot of dice; I just don't take them all to a game.)

But I see a lot of Players with a ton of dice on the table in front of them (like 20+). Sometimes this is multiple d4s for a sorcerer's constant magic missle, or multiple d6s for the fireball. But often the crop of dice are not serving a functional purpose. The Player just likes having *all* his dice in front of him. At the first NC Game Day, I took some pics of people with probably 40+ dice at hand.

What about you?

I never have any dice at hand on the table. Actually, I don't even have a table. All of my gaming is done online so we use an online dice roller.

However, one thing I do for d20 rolls is do an Excel spreadsheet of random d20 rolls and use them for my NPCs and monsters just to save time. Someone on the boards mentioned that idea and I swiped it quicker then...well, quick.

As DM I keep two full sets in front of me and sometimes throw in extras of a particular type if I know I will be needing to use more of those than normal. The rest are in the dice bag next to the chair.

As a player, I bring somewhere around 15-20. Generally 2 of each a few more d6s, and a few others depending on what weapons/spells/powers I expect to be using.

As a DM I have three 'super-sets' that each consist of 3d4, 5d6, 2d8, 3d10, 1s12, 1d20. I keep two sets on my DM table and the third set in a box top that I use for rolling when I'm at the player's table or elsewhere.

I bring one of Paladins dice bags that holds 4+ sets. I pull out the dice I need for my character's abilities and put the rest back in the bag and place it off the table. If I DM, I have 2-3 full sets out. Where we game now, we are tight on space so extra dice just get in the way.

When I'm playing, I usually like to have enough dice at hand to roll all my attacks at once, usually color-coded by attack. So, frex, with a high level ranger specializing in javelins, it could be three or four d20s, 3-4d6, in matching color-pairs, plus a d4 and an extra d6 in one of the colors for the +2 evil-bane dagger. Then I'll have at least one of each of the other dice out, just in case. The rest are in my bag, close at hand.

Multiply that by several times when I dm.

When I am playing, I'll keep 2-3 d20s and whatever dice I need for my weapons, spells, etc. opn the table; I keep the rest in my dice bag at me feet. When I am DM'ing, I keep 5-8 d20s plus 2 full sets handy.

I like to balance the utility of having what you need right in front of you with the lack of having to sift through all the dice.

And while I DO define my masculinity by the size of my dice bag, I don't feel the need to club folks over the head with it every chance I get. I just let it rest on the floor! :p
