D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

I haven't run a game in person in awhile, but I always made "pogs" for every creature on the board. I strongly preferred this method to minis because I could use google and photoshop to make an exact image of whatever homebrew NPC or monster I was running. I really like having accurately...

D&D General Letting a Game feel like a Game ~ Mechanics and Simulationism

I'm always surprised how hard some folks will squint to pretend that a roleplaying game isn't a game.

Need to create complex flying castles.

I have a campaign setting based in a planet that is completely broken a part into floating masses of earth, so flying constructs are a large part of the world. If i were you, I'd trying to make each count's fortress as conceptually distinct as possible and worry less about whether they are...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fall Of The Dwarves: What Races Do People Actually Play?

I went with the communist dwarf theme too and I'm currently playing a duergar that defected to the surface to escape fascist duergar society. The grey dwarves exalt a joyless work ethic and unending toil in order to enrich their masters, and the whole culture revolves around slavery and...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you improve monsters?

Roll the whole monster and encounter design paradigm back to 4e.

D&D General How many Races it too much?

I don't think my issue is the sheer amount of races as much as the fact that there are a bunch that I feel are conceptually bland, and I'd rather remove them and use something else. As a DM, I'm pretty open to working with players to include what they want if they ask for it but by default, I...

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

The DM doesn't have to consider any of that any more that he does now with the host of magic items that do things other than "+1 to math" in the DMG. The game hasn't fallen apart because there are different classes, feats, races, etc exist. That's how it already works.

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

+1 items are a mechanical artifact. The game still feels like DnD without them. I'd be pretty happy to see a 6e where all magic weapons and armor have qualitative gimmicks instead of math.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attribute Score Method

I've been in too many groups where i showed up with an average stat line and other people had "rolled" multiple 18s and 16s. Point buy, all the way.

D&D 5E (2014) What tools would you choose?

The races still get different amounts of proficiencies and completely different racial features. There are still trade-offs, it's just that what they are is qualitatively different after Tasha's. For example, people claim that the mountain dwarf is the best because of the sheer number of...

D&D 5E (2014) What tools would you choose?

Outside of theives tools, my experience is that 99% of tool profs are fluff or roleplaying opportunities that are heavily mediated by how the DM runs a table. Getting calligraphy and stone mason's knowledge on top of your existing build is hardly going to unbalance anything, but might add a few...

D&D 5E (2014) What tools would you choose?

Alchemist's Supplies, Calligrapher's Supplies, Mason's Tools, Poisoner's Kit, Smith's Tools, Thieves' Tools, Tinker's Tools. The character is a clan craftsman who's defecting from duergar society in order to start a worker's revolution. Anything crafty seemed like a decent fit.

D&D 5E (2014) My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

It's sort of the opposite though, right? - good at tanking but not great at melee. The issue is that because they're primarily a wizard, they're better served doing wizard stuff like fireball, lightning bolt, polymorph, wall of x, et all, instead of going into melee and trying to use Dex to hit...

D&D 5E (2014) My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

I guess we might be working with different definitions of "gish." I understand that it used to literally be a multiclass fighter/wizard githyanki and, by that definition, it's certainly a functional gish that is at least better than the generic wizard. For me, "gish" in a modern context IS the...

D&D 5E (2014) What tools would you choose?

I forgot that the herbalism kit lets your craft healing potions. That has potential.

D&D 5E (2014) My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

The bladesinger is another gish that's garbage at being a gish. It's phenomenal at being a generic wizard with high AC, but you still don't want to wade into melee with it.

D&D 5E (2014) My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

I've tried to play the eldritch knight. I really have. It's just so bad as gish compared to pretty much any other weapon-using magic class they've put out. The psi war is better at doing "magic fighter" powers. The rune knight gets stuff that's way more applicable to a magic melee user. The...

D&D 5E (2014) What tools would you choose?

I just jumped into a RofFM campaign and, with the advent of Tasha's, I find that I have a pile of tool proficiencies. More, in fact, than I even know what to do with. The dim light of the entire storyline has given me the opportunity to run a duergar without worrying about sunlight sensitivity...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC On Tasha, Race, Alignment: A Several-Year Plan

Decoupling ASIs from race is a boon to the game. I remember when my group dropped them in 4e and suddenly everyone we played with felt free to run novel concepts. Now, in 5e, I'm seeing the same thing with Tasha's as players feel freer to try different combinations that were previously...
