D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I didn't chose the right wording there, i should have used the "martial" ranger instead of the "melee" ranger. EDIT: Old habits die hard, old rangers just fade away.... ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items and identify

Got it. So, it's actually DM's discretion then?

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Read the above discussion about the 3 ranger archetypes we propose. When i say melee ranger, i mean the martial non casting class.

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I'll survive 2-4 levels if the class eventually gave me the archetype i wanted. As things are now, i literally have to MC the PC to play the melee ranger.

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

Are there any actual mechanics for half-drow or quarter-drow? I couldn't find any in the PHB.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items and identify

Side question: If identify spell doesn't identify cursed items, how does one find out about the curse (except for the obvious curse blows up in your face method)?

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

Roger that. I like the idea. I may actually do my own spreadsheet for something similar. So far i have decided on one aspect that would include role playing. I agree with the previous recommendations and have decided that my PC has the Drow eyes of his grand mother - silvery grey with violet...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I know what you mean. It was probably unavoidable, just because of the long lasting standing of the class, its popularity with the player base and the fact that it seams to have underwent more changes in flavor and role over time, then most of the other classes combined. Especially with 3.5E and...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

    1. Agreed. Even the hunter can be a "trapper" and not a "bowman". And if we interpret the hunter as a "general purpose" hinter (i.e. hunting people as well), then we are open to all kinds of weapons, both lethal and unlethal. 2. Again, Agreed. Con, STR and (Wis/Int). I can see why they removed...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

I think i'll stick to FR for this one. So half-elf and elf = half elf and half-elf and half-elf also a half elf. I was wondering, if the grand mother drow, lost the red eye glare during the long exposition to the surface world, would her offspring still feature it as a "standard" "genetic"...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Personally, i find a lot of redundancy or optional properties on the list. First of all, ranged. Nothing in ranger says mandatory ranged, just like nothing in fighter says mandatory melee. You should be going one or the other, depending on personal preference or party role. I'd even say that...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

Nice! Thanks. In this case though i thought of making the father not human, but a normal half-elf (father human, mother high elf) and mother drow. My initial idea: His father was a stereotypical half elf, (wonder lust, no roots, had adventuring pretty much thrown, if not forced on him), he was...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

    (Are we talking lore wise, or genetics wise?) If going by genetics i guess the tree would be: 1. generation: Half-Elf + Drow = 50% Half-Drow or 50% Elf-Drow 2. generation a. Half-Drow + Half-Elf = 25% Human or 25% Half-Elf or 25% Half-Drow or 25% Drow-Elf; b. Elf-Drow + Half-Elf = 25% Half-Drow...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

So, during a hard fight, they are extra tough, but otherwise just generic fighters? Makes sense i guess, if you want to make them "situationally" tough. But the 1E's were just generally tough in the low-mid levels and not so tough in the mid-high levels.... dunno, this way they'll get...

    D&D 5E (2014) A half-elven question for the lore masters

As the title says, i need help from the people that have read much more material then me regarding DnD lore and possibly Forgotten Realms. I have a concept for a half elf PC, that is a son of two half elves. His father was a son of a half elf and drow, and his mother was a daughter of an...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

How do 30 temporary HP against a quarry replicate 1E ranger?
  18. TheLoneRanger1979

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

    1. I don't think most of us that call for a non casting ranger do it because we think the casting (current) variant is "mechanically unviable" or badly under powered. We simply want non magical alternatives to rangers, that don't rely on pets and animal companions. Call it a flavor change with...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

For flavor mostly. I like unconventional ways of distinction between classes. It's easy to compare a class by how much damage per round it deals, or effective the healing provided is, or how much utility you can squeeze out of its skill repertoire. But this "dynamic" hit die? It certainly sounds...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

So we would add them if we had a class with 2HD i guess? I mean, not just for recovery, but for HP per level? Second question, why would you like to avoid the above mentioned power curve in 5E?
