as long as we aren't calling story reactions to what the players do DM railroading. I suspect a few of the strong reaction here are some DM's may have been accused of railroading when they simply laid out a story that had natural consequences (both good and bad) for players actions.

but most sandboxes are little places that match your description connected by railroads. That's gotten even worse with the advent of MMO"s. I see more and more games designed that way by young people that grew up playing MMO's and can't fathom it being wide open. But again if the players are...

    1. We weren't talking about you we were talking about DM's who might not have the skills or time to improvise. 2. There is something wrong with a group of players that doesn't understand the DM's time constraints and causes game stops like that. If it's Ocassional then fine stuff happens but...

I pointed out how I interpreted your comments. As I've said several times I think we are arguing about a tiny amount of games and that more players willingly get on the railroad than not. A new DM pulling out a Module generally runs the railroad because they have nothing else to go on or do...

You forgot 1B - The players got on the railroad by choice and are happy to go there. I'd even argue that most railroad games are that way. I've said it before. I know lots of players that love the railroad. I don't usually play with them or DM them but for this subset of D&D players a...

I do think some in these forums forget that the Sandbox may not be a railroad but it is very much the railroad station. It feels like absolute freedom but it's more like a gorrilla cage. Go too far and you'll hit the glass walls.

why do you assume the DM railroad is being authoritarian? I've seen many a game where the DM had an hour or so to come up with a game and literally had no other place to go if they players decided to "rewrite the game". Not all DM's are good at improv. Not all DM's are experienced. I've...

I'd argue the consistency died with the "DNA Reboot" of the universe. But that should probably be a whole nother thread.

Spoilers Doctor Who s15 (or 2) [[spoilers!]]

It's a new thing to the franchise that they are "Actually" gods and actively screwing with the universe. As you said the other's were pretending to be gods. we've transitioned from science fiction to science-fantasy. Some of it's been decent writing but it seems the whole franchise is...

I agree with 90% of what you said. But sometimes the difficulty we ignore is that complainer pointing out a valid thing that needs to be changed. It's far easier to walk away than face it, it's easier and when you walk away you'll probably never know you were wrong. But I do believe those...

I think the complainers are far more likely to be the problem than the non complainers but you have to be careful. No one likes to hear complaints so it's easy to just cut off the justified complainers who really just want to make things better. Humans have been killing the messenger for as...

At the table during the game I deal with it by applying consequences. I generally find that fixes a lot of players that i've had other's say can't be fixed. There are some who refuse to get along with group and sometimes the best thing is they find another game. But I've also found some of...

Complainers on both sides tend to assume it's an otherside problem instead of a human problem.

ok you are confusing a RailRoad (the module the players agreed to play), With a DM forcing the players to play a certain way or to only go to certain encounters etc. It may seem small but you are confusing the Noun Railroad with the verb of the DM who might be RAILROADING. One can be on a...

    When disagreeing…

Almost all human beings are going to take you saying thier ideas suck the same as them sucking no matter how good you are at communicating. I've seen a lot of managers over the years heartbroken when they figure that out.

Probably about the time we started thinking of people as replaceable units in the corporate machinery instead of human beings and teaching everyone that the shareholders were more important than the company, our ethics, morals and all living life on earth.

Spoilers Doctor Who s15 (or 2) [[spoilers!]]

I think RTD started out great and flamed out and that Chibnall was a train wreck. Moffat unfortunantly had to go and intentionally break ever single sacred cow of the show to make the point he was the director. Some fun episodes but he's a big part of the reason the show hasn't recovered ...

I find explaining to people the consequences of their current behavior and how it is working against them to work far better than punishing them. Punishing employees can generate short term behavioral changes but almost never generates long term changes. It's a waste of your time and their...

nice very long do it my way or hit the road. My previous statement stands. If the game is going well they'll want to sit and talk about it. If not your just back in High School being forced to talk about something that you weren't into to begin with.
