    Aging and Gaming

Thanks, I put Designing with Mind in Mind on my book-buy list. I look forward to your dissertation (and enjoy you trying to defend it against the denizens of ENworld--the only dissertation committee on this topic that matters. ;-)

Would You Get A D&D Tattoo?

My brother in law is a talented Tattoo artist, both my sisters have received tatoos from him. But I just can't think of anything that I want on my body permanently. My older son is a talented artist with pen, pencil and charcoal. If he came up with something, I might consider it as celebration...

Do you prefer your adventures to be episodic or contiguous?

I've done both. I ran a year long campaign where we would play a one to two sessions adventure. The next adventure would start with the players at the next level. In world some time had passed and we would start the adventure with each player explaining what their character had been up to...

    Aging and Gaming

Thanks @Joshua Randall for that excellent write up. When reading thing like this that both make intuitive sense and are backed up by research, but where certain points don't seem to correlate to my personal experience, I like to dig in and think about that. For example, the presentation you...

Payn's Ponderings~ Campaign settings and you?

I like specific settings when the mechanics are designed for that setting creating a very specific feel and flavor for the game. Currently I'm running, and have fallen in love again, with the Warhammer Fantasy Old World settings. For D&D, I think Eberron does the best job at creating a unique...

D&D 5E (2024) DDB Maps now integrates the combat tracker

Just played around with it. Very slick. I rarely run D&D. Just the rare one shot. But when I do, this is my goto. Curious, I know from your other posts that you are big into terrain and minis. Do you only use DDB Maps when you run games online, or do you integrate into your in-person play as well?

    D&D General Let's celebrate D&D having things we don't like! (+)

So much of D&D is not what I think when I think of the ideal game system, yet put together make something special that I can't help loving. Class and sub-class based character building, alignment, magic without consequences, magic creep, power creep in general. But I don't want D&D to change...

OSR Does "Old School" in OSR only apply to D&D?

Captain of the town watch: [while getting ready for a vigil] Fish, we shall needs draw arms of especial make. Watchman Wojo: [Extremely excited about being allowed to go on his first time lying in wait] Ho there, let me take this task! I shall make haste to the armory. Now then, what be our...

That's highly dependent on the game, characters' levels, and group.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

A coworker referred to her daughter today as a "sparkling tornado." Maybe that's a common turn of phrase, but it was new to me, and it's perfect.

Yeah, poker chips are great, but I just like the extra convenience of my status marker sticking to and moving with the mini. That said, use some blue tac and you can save a lot more money and time by just using poker chips. Could also replace minis and pogs with poker chips, but I enjoy...

D&D General Economist Articles: How did "Dungeons & Dragons" Win?

Was this covered already? Came out on the 6th, but I didn't see it until today: https://www.economist.com/culture/2024/12/06/how-did-dungeons-and-dragons-win (behind a pay/register wall) The digital article is titled "How did 'Dungeons & Dragons' Win?" In the print version it was titled...

    D&D 5E (2024) 3 Months in - Weapon Mastery

Why? How does using DDB beyond digital dice slow things down? If playing in person, I wouldn't allow it because we agree that everyone rolls physical dice out in the open. But, if anything, I would think rolling on DDB would speed things up.

    Playing without the GM present?

I would love it if that happened with my players. But we are all busy with jobs and family. I have some players who are interested in having e-mail back and forth with me regarding downtime activities etc. But generally they are only engaging with the game when we are playing it. In the OPs...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Now I want a parody of Elmo and Patsy's Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer sung by Saul Goodman as a late night lawyer commercial.
