TSR D&D Historian Ben Riggs on TSR's Salaries in the 1990s

This is exactly what happened. The cloth maps were only included in the initial runs of the revised boxed set. Later printings had the paper versions.

D&D General How Long Did You Play the Different Editions of D&D? (+)

    Cool thread :) B/X: 1982 - 1984 AD&D: 1984 - 1989 AD&D 2e: 1989 - 2002 D&D 3e: 2003 D&D 3.5e: 2003 - 2008 Pathfinder 1e: 2008 - 2018 AD&D 2e: 2014 - present I've run a few additional AD&D and B/X sessions over the years since moving onto 2e, and have returned full-time to 2e in recent years...

3 Most Underrated Traits for Gamesmasters

    1. Pacing is everything. 2. Don't roll the dice unless the outcome will be interesting. 3. Figure out what your players want and give it to them.

Amazon's LotR show - first look

Definitely the Two Trees, which puts this image back in the First Age (or before it, if you reckon the First Age as starting with the Years of the Sun). I think the city is Tirion, looking west through the Calacirya, though. Either way, it's a gorgeous image and a great tease for what is to come!

D&D General Lawful Stupid: Adventurer Streamers

Hey, glad you enjoyed it. I'm the DM of that game - it has been lots of fun :) As @Steampunkette says, the upcoming podcast will be Dragonlance. Should be interesting :) (Apologies for coming a little late to this - just ran across the thread ;) )

D&D 5E (2014) 5e has everything it needs for Dark Sun

Minor nitpick - it's the Grey that impedes travel, not the Hollow. The Hollow is a weird non-space (sometimes described as being inside the Black) and it's only feature is Rajaat, who is imprisoned there. He fills it completely because it doesn't really have any dimensions. The standard way of...

D&D General 1991 Dark Sun Setting Overview and Speculation

Unfortunately, that's a no to all of those! Dregoth can make an appearance in the module that comes with City by the Silt Sea, but it's presumed the PCs run away from him - the module is for characters of level 5-9 and, well, he's a 29th level dragon. Marauders of Nibenay presumes the PCs help...

D&D General 1991 Dark Sun Setting Overview and Speculation

No, the world map was just a fan thing which Brian expanded on (along with a few others). WotC did hand over a bunch of materials to us at athas.org but the map wasn't one of them :) I love the map, though. There was a version that had been wrapped onto a globe as well that was particularly...

D&D General On how many dice we use

I'm a DM and none of the poll options apply to what I do. I have a large bespoke set built to meet the needs of my game. 6d4, 10d6, 6d8, 4d10, 3d12, 4d20, 1d30. It's like this for things like rolling stats for Dark Sun characters, 2e versions of fireballs and lightning bolts, flame strikes...

D&D General 1991 Dark Sun Setting Overview and Speculation

This is a magnificent post - massive respect for the work and thought that went into this. I'm a huge Dark Sun fan and really I can't take issue with anything you've written here. Great stuff :). Like you, I was struck by the stuff in the WJ that described the Sea of Silt as being as the centre...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

In the last two years, I've run B/X and AD&D games for new players, all of whom are still gaming with me. One went on to start his own group, which in turn spawned a third group, so my experience is that older editions can definitely bring in plenty of new players. That said, I don't know that...

    Products That Overwhelmed You

Mage: the Ascension. I bought it when it came out, read it, ran a game. It was awful. Just awful. I spent the next year and a half re-reading, making notes, devouring the supplements that were coming out and tried again. The ensuing chronicle is still running :)

    AD&D 2E Now I have the hankering to play a 2E game...

I went back to 2e after giving 3e and Pathfinder a good shake. It's just such a robust system, compatible with all the other TSR editions to one degree or another, and you can hack the hell out of it and it still sings. I'm running a Dark Sun game now (streaming it on Twitch, actually) and it's...

D&D General Dungeons & Dragons art discussion

There's a cool thread about this over in General, talking about the quintessential D&D artist. Lots of great examples in there (I voted Trampier, Otus, Easley). Easley's 2nd edition DMG cover is my favourite D&D piece of art ever. But when it comes to favourite artist overall, I have to go for...
