Fantasy Flight's Monsters' Handbook did some of these, too. They were basically PrCs for monsters that did something very similar to what you're working with here.

Not as much as you'd think. Like D&D, 4e Talislanta used a core d20 mechanic for pretty much everything from spellcasing to attack damage. Spellcasting is very flexible. Monster stats were ridiculously easy. I wasn't real wild about how xp and advancement were handled, but it was no big...

If we can't overcome DR and/or regeneration, we usually use a combination of grappling and choking things to death. If that doesn't work, we try running away.

Have a bunch of adventurers beat them up and take it away. Cuts out the gold and gives you at least one adventures worth of plot-hook. ;)

FWIW, the more you deviate from the norm, the more you need to prepare. If your concept is pretty simple, you can wing it more. If its pretty far out, do more homework and it'll seem more 'real'.

IIRC, Nyambe had a weapon power called Heart Seeking. Basically the same mechanics as vorpal, except it impaled the heart of the target, instead of cutting off their head. Can't recall if it was more expensive or not.

4e will be popular if for no other reason than it's D&D. There's a lot of brand loyalty to the game. Yes, there will be craploads of complaining about it, regardless of when it's released. How long was ADD2e around for? At least 10 years, wasn't it? The way some people reacted when WotC...
