    Speak Language

Do people actually limit bonus languages to the 'racial' bonus languages? Every game I've been in, we let characters have any bonus languages they can justify.

    Speak Language

An optional rules I've seen that I like is allowing characters to buy a language at 'pidgen' level. If you normally pay 2 points for to speak a language fluently, you can spend one point to speak it, er, not fluently. So character knows a few conversational and/or trade phrases - sort of high...

    Where are the High Men/Dunaden?

That's just Aragorn casting a few ranger spells. :) I think the best way to do 'high men' would be to use racial levels (a la Arcana Unearthed). A PCs can take a few levels of 'human' to represent him getting in touch with his inner ubermensch (your PC can go from guy we met in a bar to king...

Anyone know of a setting that. . .

I briefly considered running a campaign set on the Illithid homeworld where aberration are the norm and things like humanoids and animals are strange creatures from beyond the depths of space. I think mainly I justed wanted an excuse to have flumphs as a PC race.

    Graduate Studies course on D&D?

Also, the latest ad for the PHB. Apparently turnabout is fair play when it comes to geeky references.

How often does the grapple mechanic come up in your game?

Plus I'm holding up the issue in my avatar. :) Thanks. That article inspired another article with a bunch of 'street fighting' feats, which Dragon turned down because they stopped printing articles with just feats. I ended up donating it to Dog Soul for their bizzarely named charity PDF "Suck...

How often does the grapple mechanic come up in your game?

When you say 'beast wrestler' I don't suppose you're using the alternate ranger combat style from Dragon #326? (He asked hopefully.)

Imps of Ill-Humor It's always cool to see one's stuff in print (Don't you just want to give the Melancholy Imp a hug?), but they cut the joke out of my article (talk about ill-humor). Now, admittedly, it was a throw-away line, but I liked it (and so did my flatmate who convinced me to leave it...

    ? re Polytheistic Worlds

Have a look at Egyption mythology. Each of the gods was patron of a particular city, and many of the myths about the gods are actually metaphors for the fortunes of the cities they represent. When a city became the new capital, for example, the myhts might associate its god with the highest...

Mongoose in 2006 (and a bit on the Industry in General)

No one's mentioned an epic movie series that's just starting, based on a beloved book series, and that's never been done as an RPG - Hello? - Narnia, anyone?

    Alignments: Team America Style

Oops, I mean Power Kill: http://www.hogshead.demon.co.uk/ It's a meta-game that can be applied to any other RPG, where in you play a schizophrenic who believes he's living in the fantasy world portrayed in the base-RPG and must come to terms with the fact that killing people and taking their...

    Alignments: Team America Style

[I had something satirical to say here, but I've self-edited because unfortunately (or, perhaps, fortunately) ENWorld isn't the US.] As I said, it fits the traditional D&D model very well. As we all know, every harmless seeming NPC is a potential doppelganger... or evil cultist... or annoying...

What *is* it about paladins that makes people nutty, anyway?

Yes, a strict lawful good character can be like that, but I would argue that he doesn't have to be. As I said, alignment is nebulous, and it doesn't cover certain things that many people think it does. Anyone - lawful or chaotic, good or evil - can be scrupulously honest or a baldfaced liar. To...

    Alignments: Team America Style

Let me start by saying that I liked the movie Team America: World Police, but I don't agree with the moral, at least as far as real world politics go. However, it seem to me to fit perfectly into the moralities of most fantasy worlds. Now the moral was summed up by a three word sentence, not...

What *is* it about paladins that makes people nutty, anyway?

Yeah, but if a paladin is losing his powers for acting out of character, then presumably some sort of characterization is involved, yes? I have a feeling the problem with paladins is that a lot of people don't understand the alignment system - specifically that it's about a useful as any other...

What *is* it about paladins that makes people nutty, anyway?

I agree that not everyone is critical of their own beliefs. But I don't think anyone can be a roleplayer for any length of time without being critical of their own beliefs. I'm reminded of a roleplaying game I read where the intorduction was apologetic for the term "roleplaying game", because in...

What *is* it about paladins that makes people nutty, anyway?

Then I don't see your point. If that's your definition of spirituality, then everyone has spirituality. Hell, I've argued that humans, as race, are "often Lawful Good". So, perhaps you could expalin from a different angle: Who, in your opinion, can't play a paladin properly?

What *is* it about paladins that makes people nutty, anyway?

I don't want to sidetrack this thread (I may be too late), but I had to respond to this: This isn't a definition for 'spirituality' this is a defintion for being a human. There is nothing in this statement that differentiates spirituality from any other system of philosophy; and everybody has a...

    Dragon #338

Ah, that explains why my query was rejected; I proposed a specialist rogue class with exactly the same ability. Great minds think alike. Further, it was inspired by the protagonist from my Worn Torn novel proposal - which was also rejected. OTOH, can't wait to see my imps in print. Woo!
