    D&D 5E (2014) Are you going to buy 5e?

I just pre-ordered the Starter Set, PHB, DMG and MM. The prices were really good, 111$ total +30$ in (sloooow) shipping. I also think that the rule set itself is nice and concise, giving room for a lot of options and customizability for running my kind of game. It's actually the first edition I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set Excerpt 5

This looks like a Gnoll to me, not a goblinoid. Good drawing anyway. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) What Do You Need From The DMG?

I really like this thread, and love the options that you put into it. With the options I selected you could run anything from a board-game like dungeon crawl, to a simulationist world building campaign. I think I might get half of what I want from the DMG, but have high hopes they will add splat...

    A rant of fiscal insanity

For me, it's totally foreign to go to a physical location to transfer money. I would just use my banks web page. Why waste time getting to the bank? I can go months without using cash.

D&D 5E (2014) Do we know if they are keeping the 20 Natural score cap? What about expanded backgrounds?

You are quite right, my argument didn't hold water. The level advancement in D&D doesn't really make much sense when you look at the time it takes to get from level 1 to 20. Depending on the campaign, it can easily be done in something like 2-3 months game time, at least in 4e: 4 encounters/day...

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set Command Spell

Something that's different can be an improvement. They aren't mutually exclusive. For instance using bar codes to identify goods at the food store instead of manually punching the individual prices is different AND an improvement.

D&D 5E (2014) Do we know if they are keeping the 20 Natural score cap? What about expanded backgrounds?

(My emphasis) I look at 5e level 1 characters more 16-17 year olds who just ran away from home. It's what their stats reflect in my opinion. If you want more involved backstories/older characters, I think starting at level 3 makes a lot more sense. There is nothing in the rules that says you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set Command Spell

Great post! Anyway, I have always written my spells and powers on my character sheet in short-hand. Something like this: Command 60' 1+1/lvl, wis, 1rnd: approach, drop, flee, grovel, halt. You are going to use the spells a lot, so just having the basics written down is enough to remember the rest.

Laptops at the table..and recent research showing how bad it is in education..does it carry over to gaming?

I find laptops and smartphones to be the biggest distraction. The laptop because it's so intuitive to multitask and it's something you are used to doing. The smartphone just has too many distractions. I find tablets to be less distracting because they are often used for media consumption, not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set Command Spell

Sure there is more or less user friendly ways of writing up spells*. I don't quite see how you can argue otherwise? If 4e or 5e's way of doing it more user friendly is something we don't know yet. *Just compare the 2e and 3e versions of the command spell. The 2e one is nearly completely...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 6/16/14

I have the same opinion. I find it much easier to use two unrelated adventures and make them my own instead of trying to do the same with two adventures that are part of an adventure path. I really liked how Red Hand of Doom was made. You had several interesting locations in the same region...

    D&D 5E (2014) Origin New Edition Panel

The thing about 3e and 4e is that after the first few splat books which were interesting, I just stopped caring what they did with player options. For me, they had produced so many options I had gone back to basic. I actually only learnt about 4e essentials way after it was published when I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Origin New Edition Panel

I think your conclusion is right, but looking at 4e essentials as anything but a 4e is probably wrong. You can play a "normal" 4e character and a 4e essentials character in the same game and they are completely compatible. Just like different sets in Magic. Depending on how good 5e* is, I think...

    D&D 5E (2014) Origin New Edition Panel

It's not really comparable though? The revisions would probably have pretty minor changes, while a new magic set basically gives you a new game. Drafts are really fun to play too, but again, it's just not comparable in my opinion. Btw, try out Dominion if you haven't already. ;) Personally, I...

D&D 5E (2014) What does this photo say to you? [Project: Morningstar)

My first reaction was that they were doing character creation, since everybody was looking at the tablet at the same time. The second thought I had was: hope I don't need it. The third one was: I don't need it, I have a 1-page level 13 4e character sheet, and run initiative on cardboard...

Sounds about right to me. I enjoy discussing things on forums.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A chiropractic adjustment for D&D (and why I'm very hopeful)

Some good points, but it does increase the workload on the DM, especially when it comes to spells. Using the UE cleric option probably works, but then you have banned the ordinary cleric. You are still left with feats, prestige classes and magic items. (Magic items wasn't the worst of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A chiropractic adjustment for D&D (and why I'm very hopeful)

I can see why we don't agree here. You are looking at new classes that you think are relatively well balanced against each other (I haven't tried them). I think you have a valid point here. At the same time, you still have all the overpowered Wizards, Clerics and Druids, but now with feat...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A chiropractic adjustment for D&D (and why I'm very hopeful)

I am currently playing in two concurrent 4e games. One is stuck in 2008 and the other one uses post MM3 monster/stats/character builds. The pacing has completely changed in combat and the mechanics for both monsters and characters works a lot better. The evolvment of 4e rules is completely...
