D&D 5E (2014) How many (ancient) dragons would it take to destroy a (dwarven) city?

Okay, so you've got a little city of fifty thousand dwarves just hanging out. That's, what, about 25 tons of food being imported into the city, every single day, to keep starvation and food riots at bay. So take your dragon out and scorch the earth. It might take a little while. Eat some of...

D&D 5E (2014) Issues with the "NPCs" in the MM and HotDQ (SPOILERS!)

Yep, that should work. Feel free to let us know how it goes; there's probably some interest to see your builds over in the Homebrew and/or Character Build subforums. Cheers, Roger

D&D 5E (2014) Hex maps and dungeons and dragons.

My hunch is that square graph paper was a lot easier to find in the 1970s than hex graph paper, but I'm mostly guessing here. OTOH, the Outdoor Survival map board is, if I correctly recall, hex-based, so there's some foundation for asserting that the D&D default for outdoor and small-scale maps...

    D&D 5E (2014) Forced movement

Nope; looks like you've got it all figured out to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) How much of a corpse?

I'd probably rule vaguely around 'important bits'. A complete corpse would be pretty great. Just a head is okay. Just a skull is probably fine too. Just the tongue is starting to push things a bit, but sure, okay. A major organ like the heart or liver is making me roll my eyes a bit, but...

D&D 5E (2014) How Much Lore is Enough?

I categorize the monsters and their lore into 3 levels: 1. I can build an encounter around this. E.g. stirge, troglodyte, zombie. 2. I can build an adventure around this. E.g. intellect devourer, revenant, myconid. 3. I can build a campaign around this. E.g. slaad, modron, aboleth. I...

D&D 5E (2014) I got inspired by this picture. How do I flesh him out as the Big Bad?

I'm not sure making them just one warlock is enough. I might make them both warlocks -- beholden to different entities, of course. Each probably believes the other is actually their familiar.

D&D 5E (2014) I got inspired by this picture. How do I flesh him out as the Big Bad?

I kinda feel like making him a doppelganger/intellect devourer. The intellect devourer attacked, the doppelganger moved his own brain down into his torso, the devourer moved in to his skull, and there we are. An uneasy alliance at best, but they're making it work.

    D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Preview

They just look like rocks. They're actually their own eggs that they're dropping on you. They've got very dense shells.

    D&D 5E (2014) Kobold Preview

They look good enough. Not really crazy about them speaking Common by default; might strip that off so the PCs who know Draconic can feel a little more useful. Might think about making them stunty dragonborn instead.

    D&D 5E (2014) Jump

That should be fine; if a PC tries to get carried away (heh) with jumping for miles and miles across the landscape, as wonderful as that is, I might start charging Exhaustion.

D&D 5E (2014) What happend to Know Alignment and Detect EVIL OMG !

Still always a good time to play a paladin who is convinced she can detect evil at will.

D&D 5E (2014) DMG release date pushed back

The art finally made me realize that these guys are modrons, which I probably should have figured out a long time ago:

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview: Manticore

They've probably got a hilarious lisp as well, so there's a PRO-TIP for all the DMs out there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Casting in armor - somatic only?

I'm not so entirely sure I want plate to be a perfect wizard cage for that bad bad spellslinger you just captured, so yeah, if someone really wants to clomp around incompetently in some armour they found, and cast non-somatic spells, I'd probably allow it, if it made them happy. Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) Fabricate: a world change spell

A war between the Wizards' Guild and the Armourers' Guild instigated by a PC from the former horning in on the racket of the latter is a pretty good basis for a campaign, so consider that stolen. Cheers, Roger

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview: Manticore

Oh no, a manticore! Quick, everyone lie flat on your back. That helps for some reason, until it runs out of spiky bits. I like that you can cut a deal with the thing. Just eat the hirelings and we'll be on our way. I feel like they should be the fomorians of the sphinx world. Need to mull...

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview: Intellect Devourer

If a combat went down in just the right way and the party ended up with a non-dead non-infested zero Intelligence meatsack, I think I'd probably let them get back to normal through the convenient method of themselves eating the Intellect Devourer's brain. Long-term side effects of this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview: Intellect Devourer

Between these things, cambions, succubi, incubi, etc, it seems like we've seen quite a lot of these sorts of political monsters. Maybe it's just a fluke of how the previews are coming out. Anyway, yeah, lots of good reasons to gank Mr. Johnson.

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview: Intellect Devourer

Swarm of Poisonous Snakes looks like they've got a pretty decent shot at it. I mean, sure, they're not eating your brain, but you're still probably going to have a bad day if you fall into hole full of poisonous snakes. If those poisonous snakes have even tinier Intellect Devourers snuggled up...
