D&D General Let's talk about sandboxes, open worlds and hexcrawling

If you all like hexcrawls or sandbox play, check out the Populated Hexes patreon. It's OSR (using Old School Essentials), but the gist of it and the ease of swapping out stat blocks for 5e equivalents makes it an extremely useful series. It shows how to do the interconnectedness thing very well...

D&D General Let's talk about sandboxes, open worlds and hexcrawling

Thanks! Well, I can say that if you're specifically talking 5e, I've published Hexcrawling: Wilderness Survival and Random Encounters on DMsGuild. I saw a need for it because 5e specifically doesn't worry about what "getting lost" means: you just wander around for 1d6 hours (maybe trigger an...

OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

I found adding a more interesting selection of weapons and Dungeon Crawl Classics' Mighty Deeds of Arms rules (or at the very least, inspiration from them) really helped the fighty classes sing a little bit more. My two resources for this: Steel and Fury (for DCC) Arms and Armor (for Castles &...

OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

The Rules Cyclopedia was cool for its time -- really cool, IMHO -- but it still suffered from D&D's inability to organize information very well: certain rulings remain buried in a wall of text about exceptions, and there was often more words than necessary to describe something, leading to...

Critical Role Wildemount: Most Pre-orders Since D&D Core Rulebooks

As a massive Greyhawk and Planescape fan, I gotta agree with this. There's literally nothing that WOTC could put out for the vast majority of their older settings that would be any more interesting than, "Here's how to mechanically build this obscure thing in 5E rules." I think people constantly...

Critical Role Wildemount: Most Pre-orders Since D&D Core Rulebooks

If it's any consolation, so far WOTC seems largely uninterested in revisiting anything (campaign-setting related, at any rate) outside of the Realms, no matter how well it sells. D&D Stranger Things had tons of hype, Curse of Strahd is often cited as the "best" adventure so far on a great many...

    Lay-offs at Fantasy Flight Games?

For the RPG side alone, I simply can't imagine a model that continues to be cost effective for them with the likely exorbitant prices they must be paying for a SW license, and the fact that they pretty much dried up their release schedule by launching three big game books (with a lot of...

WotC New D&D Stream Replaces Dice, Camera, Action!

I wonder how much of that is because "threat of death" and TPKs are not something that translate well to long-term investment of a streamed game series. It's odd to me that even these big-name DMs don't really take a lot of the advice out there of "how to set stakes that matter, even if death...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons & Dragons Vs. Rick and Morty: A Review

Certainly to a degree. I mean, there's a couple scenes in the very beginning that specifically talk about roleplay, but don't give you a lot of reasons to be roleplaying because they are at best info dumps. There's also an unstated thread through the adventure that the designers mentioned that's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons & Dragons Vs. Rick and Morty: A Review

Agreed. I'd like to see these hit both notes: (1) be a gateway thing that generates some buzz and is a fun combo of franchise+D&D, and (2) is replayable. Both the original Starter Set and the Essentials Kit are easily expandable and replayable with just the contents of the box, never mind what...

Do You Know Your Glaive-Guisarme From Your Bohemian Earspoon?

A great point. Being able to compile this stuff so that we have realistic versions and more fantastical stuff...and keep it separate! That'd be awesome. But with very few exceptions, this stuff is just left picture-less and poorly described in most RPG releases.

D&D General DMs Guild Roundup: Encounters in Avernus and More

Yeah, I don't know when I'll find time to really dig into it, but it looks amazing. As a fan of old school play, seeing some of the stuff in Acquisitions Inc and then this release really scratches an itch that unfortunately I don't get to see in play all that much.

    D&D 5E (2014) Essentials Kit D&D Beyond Adventures?

I've been reading Acquisitions Inc. on the DNDBeyond App on my tablet and it's really great. Better than most of my book and comic book apps, in fact.

Domille’s Wondrous Character Sheet Out Now on DMsGuild!

What would you like on the spell sheet? We purposely left the combat/spellcasting section open for that in an attempt to remain minimalist. Here's how I picture it being filled out:
