Mari Kolkowsky (D&D Art Director) got laid off yesterday

A layoff, by definition, is not about performance. But even if the conversation was "so-and-so is no longer working at WotC and we don't know why" it would still be poor form to speculate as to whether they might have been fired because they were bad at their job.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L November 4th Warlock Design

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Do you think that there's a horde of teenage girls itching to play Dungeons & Dragons if there's a warlock class? Because, you know, that would be extremely healthy for the industry.

D&D 5E (2014) Signs & Portents (that we can read into) about the ETA of 5E

The sad thing about Dragonspear is the final packet came out a month afterwards and invalidated a goodly chunk of it. Having a physical copy of the rules that AREN'T 100% correct is pretty useless. I'm running a 5e game right now, and Dragonspear just sits on a shelf.

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters 10/30/2013: Trick or Treat?

If the contract between players and DM is that everything is created ahead of time and the PCs are interacting with a pre-populated world (not one that the DM changes/fudges in response to player actions) than I think this is a fine approach. Personally, I prefer to respond to player...

D&D 5E (2014) NPCs/Monsters being able to use PC classes.

From a practical standpoint, NPCs built as PCs will have distinct mechanical advantages over PCs because of daily resources, but there's nothing to say that a fight between a single PC and NPCS of the same level needs to be even. The toolbox to create NPCs with class levels will come with the...

Pronouns in D&D - How should gender be handled?

A few additional thoughts: 1: When the late William Saffire discussed this topic with the late Chief Justice Rehnquist (though not in specific regard to D&D), the Chief Justice's solution was to rewrite the sentence to use the third person plural they. 2: The third person singular they, while...

Pronouns in D&D - How should gender be handled?

That is not how language works. Linguists do not set the rules. They study what writers and speakers are already doing...

D&D 5E (2014) ALL ABOARD!!! Should rules for climbing big opponents be a part of the Core rules of D&D Next?

I climbed on a dragon at Gencon during the Candlekeep playtest. (That was the one where they were running three to four tables simultaneously with separate interdependent goals.) Sadly, the dragon shook me off before it could fly me to the next table! I don't think there need to be complex...

D&D 5E (2014) Playing the Game vs. Reading the Rules of the Game

To be fair, his post WAS accusatory, was SEEMINGLY untrue, but certainly wasn't baseless. You accused the original poster of putting together a biased poll without giving any good reason HOW it was unbiased, and claimed the results were suspect because they show that a lot of people on these...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Monsters and Stories

I would think the whole point is to give creatures a distinctly D&D story, which drow and githyanki already have. I'm still fairly certain that part of their mandate is to lockdown a "D&D Bible" for use with the company's non-RPG products. Think about it: Diversification is a big part of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/17/13 - Crits, Damage on Miss, Wildshape

Yeah, but not on every hit. Sometimes, a miss is a miss, and this rule doesn't allow for that.

Does D&D Next need to be a success for D&D to be a success?

Millions of people played D&D in the 1980s. It had a fad/boom. The reason you get references in pop culture today is because guys who played it in the 80s are now in charge. The reason that it's a valuable commodity today is largely for nostalgia. Between LotR showing fantasy movies can be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Update avaliable

So Druids and Paladins got updated, but it looks like we didn't get the save DC for Dragonborn. Was that covered anywhere?

    D&D 5E (2014) Will I like D&D Next?

It sounds like you're saying that it's being relegated to an internal Alpha test because of weaknesses in the game, but actually the opposite is true. (The game has advanced to the point where they're ready to move it to the pre-planned internal Alpha.) You're certainly welcome to like some...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: new playtest packet 10/15, Druid update

Yeah. I think I got mixed up because I read the column last night (Sunday night, after midnight) and was thinking "Oh, it'll be up tomorrow." But of course that probably means Tuesday afternoon.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: new playtest packet 10/15, Druid update

Did they actually release the update somewhere? I don't see it.

D&D 5E (2014) Talk to me about Monster Math

I'm starting a Next campaign on Wednesday. For folks who've been playing regularly, how is the math looking? Are there any quick tweaks I can make so that things balance a little better? (Say, bump up To Hit or AC or knock down HP or something?)

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: new playtest packet 10/15, Druid update

I don't remember exactly how it worked in 1e, but at a high level you're describing the new 5e solution.

    AD&D 2E Room in 5e for 2e-style multiclassing?

Keep in mind that the 9/9 character only has HD and proficiency bonus of a 9th level character, while the 6/6 character has HD and prof bonus of a 12th level character. I wouldn't want both systems to be official, but this looks like it could be a viable module/hack.
