    D&D 5E (2014) Fireball tweak idea

That would be a prime example of a situation where a wizard should think twice about whether explosive magic is the right tool for the job. Absolutely a feature, not a bug.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fireball tweak idea

You're assuming a fiction where wizards are common enough to be a reasonably frequent hazard for ordinary humanoids. And in any case, balancing the spell in this way reminds me of trying to balance the overpowered paladin with behavior restrictions. What's that old maxim -- something to the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fireball tweak idea

I am hardly the first to notice that fireball is a pretty good spell. In fact, in my experience it tends to crowd out all the other 3rd-level options, even for characters who aren't big on evocation. I don't want to nerf it into the ground: it's iconic, and tossing a room-filling explosion...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Fixing" assassinate.

What, reliable advantage? Samurai and barbarians don't seem to be breaking anything with theirs.

D&D 5E (2014) When RAW goes too far

Well, there was no rule to convert that movement into an attack or damage so RAW using it as a weapon was out. In physical terms, despite its movement it somehow never acquired velocity or momentum; when the last commoner let go of it it would fall at their feet just like any other item they...

D&D General The Generic Deities of D&D

If I were writing generic D&D rules, I'd just use the Greek gods. Most people in the English-speaking world already have a passing familiarity with their stories, so you can just say "Ares, God of War" and they're up to speed without further exposition. No need to reinvent the wheel. Gets a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aspurgers/autism effects?

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010945217303428?via%3Dihub https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3834557/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/03/170307100346.htm I'd never heard this before, but after a quick search, the link between the two conditions looks...

    D&D 5E (2014) Advice on Setting Creation

You're never going to come up with all your good ideas in one go. Tolkien built Middle-Earth over decades, and didn't hesitate to change stuff he had previously established for himself. So rather than try to plan everything out in advance and then feel like you're handcuffed to that plan, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Brainstorming a new Rage mechanic

I thought that the 3.5 Unearthed Arcana version of rage, where you are raging whenever you are below half your maximum hit points, was the easiest and fairest way to do rage if the player wants it to be less of a conscious thing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does Slashing/Piercing/Bludgeoning even matter?

If you use poisons, they have to be applied with slashing or piercing damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) A magician without Spells

I'm pretty sure the warlock was intended to be usable this way, especially given its 3E precursor. But the class has a lot of moving parts that you sort of have to lock into place to get there, and I think a simple, purpose-built class would be better at it.

Unearthed Arcana UA "Brute" -- Any updates?

Because you want to bother with thinking and tactics. For the type of player the battlemaster is intended for, thinking and tactics are their own reward. If you regard the complexity of a class as a price you have to pay, something you have to suffer through, in order to earn an effective...

Unearthed Arcana UA "Brute" -- Any updates?

The latest I'm aware of would be would be the even less official and less complete, but cooler, weapon master.

    D&D 5E (2014) Feat for extra reactions?

My concern is that, especially with the proper build, "occasionally" can still be a lot more frequently than the 5-10% of the time that GWM procs. For the record, I did find an official extra-reactions feature that isn't limited to once per turn: the hydra's heads.

    D&D 5E (2014) Feat for extra reactions?

Thinking outside the box: I like it. I'm not sure this is exactly what's needed here, but definitely putting legendary-actions-on-PCs on the back burner for future use.

    D&D 5E (2014) Feat for extra reactions?

For cleanliness' sake, I would do one or the other: on-rest recharge or on-dodge activation. I do like it with dodge better than giving up attacks as I did with Hold the Line, and I think that giving up your whole action is sufficient payment that it doesn't need another limit. Perhaps HOLD THE...

    D&D 5E (2014) Feat for extra reactions?

Like @NotAYakk said, it's the current turn of whomever is acting. Orc A moves, you react, you get the reaction back at the end of the orc's turn so you have it on Orc B's turn. It's just there to put a hard limit on reactions of one per turn, which is consistent in every WotC extra-reaction...

    D&D 5E (2014) Feat for extra reactions?

My battlemaster player has been saying that he doesn't feel like he has enough control in combat with only one reaction. I'm aware that extra reactions are potentially suuuper strong -- they're what the cavalier gets as its 18th-level feature, after all. But I do try to be responsive to concerns...

D&D 5E (2014) Healing spirit has been updated?

They must have really thought this was a problem; they've been very very hesitant to issue functional changes of this magnitude. The other errata in the XGtE update are, y'know, errata -- typos.

D&D 5E (2014) Have we rebalanced the Champion Yet?

And the sort of thing that makes me say, "You opted for this class that chooses maneuvers, you have chosen poorly, these are the consequences, I shouldn't handicap the champion because of your mistake."
