    D&D 5E (2014) Martial Techniques

When I first put these together, I had them far less "limited" and actually had them split between classes. I'd posted it elsewhere, and the discussion quickly turned to "This is how you break this with this class feature" etc, mostly centered around the Barbarian and Rage Strike. From that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martial Techniques

I was a big fan of how 4e gave Martial characters interesting attack options that had an impact on the battlefield besides "damage" and was sad to see how this was stripped from them with each subsequent 5e playtest. I know some players prefer "Martial" characters to make nothing but melee...

    D&D 4E Thing I thought 4e did better: Monsters

4e just felt much "clearer" about it for some reason. Monster level=player level for the most part, so tossing a group of equal levels at each other worked. 1/3 CR rating=1 PC just feels off for some reason. Maybe it's just how I DM but the entire party fighting one single monster is very...

    D&D 4E Thing I thought 4e did better: Monsters

This was a major benefit. I honestly hate DMing in 5e because of how annoyingly fiddly "CR" is. 4e's intense focus on balance meant I could toss five level four monsters at the level four party and it would work. 5e is a weird mix of math comparisons that really slows things down.

    What are people homebrewing?

So far most of this homebrew has been pretty "broad". Anyone doing anything for specific classes? Most felt pretty good by the end of 4e, though Psionics could have used some more support I feel. I want to write up some sort of Feat to help out the Battlemind's "Mind Spike" but really can't come...

    What are people homebrewing?

I thinking of making them full on actual "Vancian" magic more or less, just far more limited in the number of total slots. Skill Powers I'm toying with a point or specialization system. Instead of taking a Feat for them or swapping out utilities, you gain certain ones based on the number of...

    What are people homebrewing?

I really like how that reads. Attaching them to Healing Surges is interesting. I've been playing with a sort of (limited) Vancian Ritual system, maxing out at around two per level, scaling at 1/5/9 by tier. Haven't really started in to much on the Rituals themselves, mostly just slotting them...

    What are people homebrewing?

Yeah, I'll probably yank Silver Tongue out. I wanted something to sort of show Warlocks being good with voices and influencing people. Maybe some sort of "you make people hear ghostly voices" sort of power. That would make them interesting stealth/distraction characters if they wanted.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Fighter: Samurai, Sharpshooter, Arcane Archer & Knight

Honestly, I'm straight tempted to give a combination of the Arcane Archer and Battle Master "maneuvers" out for free, while restricting the extra "damage" to short rests. The effects balance pretty well against what casters sling around. I actually wrote up a whole set of "Augment Basic Attack"...

    What are people homebrewing?

The ones that give scaling +2 being the biggest offenders right? These were mostly aimed at giving other characters some fun options. The table enjoyed them, though I can see how those especially might fit better as "Skill Powers" which might be my next iteration of this as I'm tinkering with...

    What are people homebrewing?

Okay, so I dug out and polished up something I've used in my last game. Basically, I granted "Cantrip" like powers to every class in the game. Martial has a few that are...a bit of a stretch, while the others are pilfered from all over. The one game I used them in the players really enjoyed...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Fighter: Samurai, Sharpshooter, Arcane Archer & Knight

Arcane Archer-Love the idea of finally breaking away from "I make an attack" but again it's super limited. Would be nice to see the "damage" boost of Magic Arrow limited, while the various effects are unlimited. Knight-nice to see Marking as a mechanic make a return. Excuse me while I grant it...

    What are people homebrewing?

Psionics are always tossed about pretty liberally, though I never really equate them so much with "healing" in my mind. On condensing powers, I sort of want to mash each "tier" into a single pool of like 12 (cutting out redundant powers) and let players pick any power from the list at the...

    What are people homebrewing?

Most of them I've quite literally ripped from 3.5e and 5e. I've yet to really adjust the wording, mostly just swapping out "Makes a X Save". For the most part I dislike how 4e writes rituals. Most "magic" in 4e feels very empty, so I might actually tweak them to a bit to have them read like...

    What are people homebrewing?

Wow, I really like that concept. It could play well with the "Leader" roll. If the group Leader is killed, monsters make a save or become "disorganized" and turn into minions. Maybe a "Rout" rule or some such would be a good term. Speaking of tracking HP/Conditions, I'm gearing up to run a...

    What are people homebrewing?

I'd probably jettison them. I like the idea of Themes, but they are sort of fiddly and distract from the design space of specific classes at times. They could probably fit with what I'm doing, or be mined for options. Like all editions, 4e really had some bloat at the end. The original Dark Sun...

    What are people homebrewing?

I'm basically welding this onto the already existing classes. Your character still gains everything they'd normally get as a level one 4e PC (Fighter Talent or Druid Primal Aspect), but now also has additional features to pick from at later levels (probably each even level). There would be three...

    What are people homebrewing?

Glad you asked, since I've started a rather meaty 4e homebrew project focused mostly on punching up "Roleplay" and making each class feel a little bit more unique with actual class feature choices. Using the Essential's Mage as inspiration, I've decided to create a similar...

D&D 4E Throwing ideas, seeing what sticks (and what stinks)

The card system idea is...interesting, if a little odd. Reminds me a good deal of the Crusader from Book of Nine Swords. It could be interesting to tie class features to it in some way even. Various control effects, damage, or marks. Might be a bit too swingy though. After dipping into 5e...

Holmes in my D&D: dealing with Perception+Insight optimization?

Okay, I've pulled up the language of the feat. "Whenever you would make a Perception or Insight check, you ca make an Arcana check instead." Yep, I hate this feat already and would probably ban it from my table. Practically all other skill substations in 4e are encounter powers or limited in...
