Your introduction to D&D: what order of books?

"Monochrome Blue" (Holmes) Basic D&D B2 Keep on the Borderlands "Red" (Cook) Expert D&D X1 Isle of Dread AD&D 1E DMG A couple of old Dragon Magazines (issue numbers in the 60s and 80s) AD&D 1E MM AD&D 1E PHB A-series G-D-Q series After that, I was basically hooked.

    NPC Dictionary of Name Pronunciation

Well, the usual explanation has to do with the fact that English is in one respect a gleeful mish-mash of many other languages -- it does make spelling "by ear" (and, conversely, pronouncing "by eye") a not-inconsequential task. I certainly get tripped up on occasion... and (not to brag) I'm...

Pathfinder 1E WotC desperately needs to learn from Paizo and Privateer Press

I seem to recall that the 2E PHB was Palatino 8/10. The 4E PHB appears to weigh in with Mentor at 9.75/13. If I'm right, this means the text is over 20% larger and the leading is 30% taller. Of course, font size isn't everything.

    White space in Player's Guide

As you'll probably have determined by now if you're using Adobe Reader, there's your problem. But just for completeness's sake, I'm willing to bet this is it. To elaborate, the "white space" area should be filled with a dark bitmap that lies "behind" the white text in the sidebar and makes it...

    PDF to Lulu question

You mentioned in another thread you were using OpenOffice. It's a shot in the dark here, but try modifying the Internet Link character style.

    PDF to Lulu question

Not to be flip about it, but I suspect that whatever's in the print file is what Lulu prints. That is, if the PDF has colored, underlined text in it, the paper version will have colored (or gray, if grayscale interiors are being printed), underlined text. In general, I don't use colored or...

    Question: Open Office and Bookmarks

OpenOffice bookmarks and PDF bookmarks appear to be two different things, which would explain this behavior. After looking around a bit, it would seem that OpenOffice can generate PDF bookmarks based on the document outline assuming the document outline has been implemented properly (through...

    New PDF Software?

Just to be clear, Acrobat (Std or Pro) is not a layout tool; it is the tool you use to create a PDF from already existing content and add functionality to the PDF once it's created. Even without Acrobat, you can generate a PDF with free or low-cost tools. I've seen CutePDF, PDF995, and...

    Deities and the SRD

Lore of the Gods appears to be a d20/3.5/OGL product, not a 4E-compatible product. There is a vast difference.

    Deities and the SRD

I wouldn't have guessed that the areas of influence are mechanical expressions, but I suppose the intent here is to ensure they're available for use. I can't imagine why else they'd be called out. (Obviously alignment names are mechanical expressions.)

Font used in the D&D 3.5 PHB, DMG, and MM?

Headings: Pterra: Pterra font family « MyFonts Text: Celestia Antiqua: Celestia Antiqua® font family « MyFonts Tables: Scala Sans: FF Scala Sans® font family « MyFonts TSR/WOTC Font FAQ: TSR & WotC Font FAQ These were used throughout the 3.0 and 3.5 "core" product lines, AFAIK. Forgotten...

    How Complex Should D&D Be?

Perhaps, instead of insinuating something about most of the poll respondents, it might be helpful to recognize that the complexity of its rules is not the only determiner of whether a person will play a particular game.

    PC Problem

Just to clarify that my point in posting what I did was that the "controlling other characters" schtick the bard character is trying to pull off using skills is actually not possible under the rules. I agree there is a deeper issue of inter-player and player-DM friction.

    Blaster Casters

IMHO, the 3.5 warmage (Complete Arcane) makes a decent blaster caster. Despite everything, rolling damage dice is just fun.

Basic Fantasy RPG - Paladin Question

Agreed that this is the literal wording of the quoted rule.

    Back in The Day!

You got to throw them? Back in MY day, our younger siblings threw US down the steep hill, and when they got finished counting how many times we'd bounced, we had to come back up and keep DMing for them.

    PC Problem

IMC, a PC's social skills can never be used "against" other PCs. Ever. I mean sure, you can roll it, but it's up to the (target) player to believe, trust, or do what the persuasive PC says... or not. Sense Motive, opposed Diplomacy, or whatever... not required. With NPCs, consider that skills...
