How to deal with death in RPG?

Part of me is tempted to reply to Saelorn sarcastically. Instead, I'll be serious. Monsters from mythology lose a lot of their bite if they lose their defining trait. Did Perseus win because Zeus fudged the dice? No, he won because he used his brain and worked against what he knew Medusa would...

How to deal with death in RPG?

I'm starting to have a problem with the concept of "random death", in that, I don't think it's actually random. You got into or were forced into a fight and chose not to flee when losing, or you didn't check for traps (or failed your find traps roll) and triggered the trap you didn't find (until...

How to deal with death in RPG?

*sigh* Only one page in and we a already have a “ death as the only consequence of combat” straw man?

Don't Use the Internet, It's Silly Season!

I know this is April Fool’s fun, but as I recall you only start with a six pack of clones in Paranoia, though you can buy more.

    Why the hate for complexity?

In my non-experience, "GMless" games tend to be "whoever's the loudest is the GM" games.

    Why the hate for complexity?

I know your post is a few pages ago, and that is indeed what I meant. A complex section of rules, which aren't applied all the time, do not make the entire game complex.

    Why the hate for complexity?

My basic beef with people dismissing games they deem complex goes something like this. Rando sees some amount of complex rules, then rando assumes that because complex rules are included the entire game is complex, and dismisses the entire game on a false assumption.

    Why the hate for complexity?

I'm not a fan of the idea of RPG theory at all. From what the Forge did, I am of the opinion that it did way more harm to RPGs than help.

    What are you currently playing?

Sadly nothing. Haphazard work schedule and arranging time to meet or get together on Discord is often difficult.

Help wanted: Five-room dungeon for two level 1 5E/RPG beginners

I'm guessing for your setup, opening the door to the room with the animated armor counts as "disturbing anything in the room"?

    Why the hate for complexity?

I think at this point it's pretty clear that the word "complexity" is more subjective than objective. As I mentioned before without using myself as an example, what another might consider really complex I might consider trivially simple, and vice versa. One thing I've noticed is that "crunch...

"I Quit" Public Play - Am I just an impatient jerk? (LONG)

When the convention gives you allows you to set the experience you want the players to have, and rate the complexity of the rules: In general, the higher both are set, the less likely you are to get uninvested players. As for jerks, that's what security is for, if they continue after you've...

    Why the hate for complexity?

I may have missed it, but one thing I don't think we've discussed here is that what is seen as complex to one person may not be by another.

    Why the hate for complexity?

I think at the core, the need for complexity is "Some players are nuts and bolts type people, others aren't". One True Wayism isn't limited to complexity as goal games, as evidenced by presenting an open game and immediately being asked "Is it d20 system?". 20 years ago, I was a One True Wayer...

"I Quit" Public Play - Am I just an impatient jerk? (LONG)

They only public RPG playing I do is at conventions. For a time, I was part of a group that would occasionally meet at a brewery, and it worked out OK. As for gaming in game stores, did it once, never again. No space, no real gatekeeping allowed, too loud.

    Why the hate for complexity?

In my experience, on this and other RPG forums, it seems that many people confuse "complex rules" with "difficult system". Reading some online reviews of games I like, I get the impression that some people think "because complex rules are included you must use them all the time", though I do...

Are there any fantasy/medieval RPGs that take into account the effectiveness of different weapons against different armors?

In my anecdotal experience, Weapon v. Armor adjustments slows down play, which is why it seems to be mostly ignored in systems where it's an optional rule. This is why, while similar, I prefer HARP to RM. I'll still play RM, just never run it.

Why does the stigma of the "jerk GM" still persist in our hobby?

There are also an amount of players who think any actual danger to their character makes a DM bad, even if it is totally fair by the rules. So some DMs labeled as bad may only be so in certain players’s eyes.

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

4e brought on a lot of changes that I didn't like, as I know what I like in a game. 5e claims to be able to emulate any previous edition of D&D. As far as I'm concerned, after being put off by 4e, that was too little, too late. Also, when you've been a gamer long enough, you eventually have to...

How Did I Become a Grognard?

Yes, the horror days of the dumb fighter, because it was the only class to which you qualified. That said, things did get fleshed out over time. From Elf as warrior mage "Class" and Dwarf as class to multi and dual classing, then actual warrior mage classes. It reminds me of the catch 22 of job...
