How Did I Become a Grognard?

You must have posted before I edited. I agree to an extent. The whole point of including "Falling" in the first place was to prevent a foreseen problem of a paladin's player ruining everyone else's fun, e.g., "I don't have to obey the local laws, I answer to a higher power." When you feel the...

How Did I Become a Grognard?

Paladins are not the problem. Bad paladin players and paladin hating GMs are the problem. While this is a dominantly D&D/Pathfinder board, there are systems where a fighter (or any other class for that matter) can take a "lay on hands" ability. Given that in one of those games that I own, a...

Are there any fantasy/medieval RPGs that take into account the effectiveness of different weapons against different armors?

Cliché "it's all escapism in the end" line. Most systems, even the ones with brutal, graphically descriptive combat use abstraction in various places. In most games, except some that are more for over the top, I'd say that you're finding the gaps once it comes to metal armor. OK, a thin...

Decapitation and lethality in your game

I've mentioned that I've grown more toward the make combat matter side of things. That said, most creatures aren't going to want to fight to the death, unless they're insane, mindess, sick, or going to die either way, e.g., "go fight those guys or be executed for cowardice".

Convention Prep - what's on your list?

It was my first time there last year. After a 10.5 hour drive, never mind stops, I wasn’t exactly thinking about options. Also had zero cash on me.

Decapitation and lethality in your game

Depends on the game. You better bet your last toenail that dismemberment and decapitation is on the table for HARP. Other games, it varies. People's tastes change as they get older or simply experience other games. Some grow away from gritty, some grow toward it. I'm in column two: I want...

How Did I Become a Grognard?

Tangent: what do you call someone who grumbles about the mere existence of older gamers? Not anything that older gamers do, just that they are.

Convention Prep - what's on your list?

I met a couple of my friends from my days at Winona State, we all went in a single car to the nearby Red Robin on the Thursday. The friend who was driving was able to park when we got back. On Friday I drove to Firehouse Subs because I was having issues with which side of the hotel corresponded...

Convention Prep - what's on your list?

Do not leave the hotel by car: you’ll have to park illegally. I learned that last year. Even the overflow fills up fast.

How Did I Become a Grognard?

Oddly, while I started with AD&D2E, I never want to go back. I guess the warts are too obvious to me now. I would never use a smartphone for a character sheet. Even the biggest ones are too small for my visual comfort. Yes, even turned sideways.

The Battle Continues Over "Childish Things"

Yes and no. There are things any person, hopefully has scheduled to do, those time slots are filled. In this case, reading is not a priority. The time is still there, the person just isn't interested in using it that way. We have a lot more empty time than we think, especially when we drop "I...

Shatner, Wheaton & More In D&D Themed Big Bang Theory Episode

The negativity is because the show relies on outdated, inaccurate stereotypes of "nerds". While "nerd" is hardly a useful word anymore because everyone is a nerd about something, after all, what is a jock if not a "sports nerd", I digress. The show is insulting to nerds because it shows overly...

The Battle Continues Over "Childish Things"

I'm not a fan of C.S. Lewis's works anymore, for reasons I won't get into here. That said, he did have a quote about, and I'm paraphrasing here "when I became an adult I put away childish things, including the need to appear very grown up." Context, I believe, was from a habit of hiding to read...

    Anyone ever GM'd for Money?

Thought about it, but I don't think it's lucrative. Increasing my prices to allow stuff I don't really want to deal with in the first place would lead to low demand to hire me as the GM.

How Many RPG Books Do You Own?

Too many. I know I can make money selling some, but others will have to be donated, recycled, or trashed.

Paranoia: Red Clearance Edition Index and Alternate Card Rules

I am a commie mutant traitor and have not even effectively printed the Paranoia Mandatory Fun Card Game. As I am already on my way to a termination booth, if I misspelled the name of the game, please do not hold it against my next clone. Thank you for your infinite mercy, Friend Computer.

    Bad Guys Have Adventures Too

While this didn't go the direction I expected from the title, I feel this is good advice for a villain campaign.

What Game Did You Leave D&D For?

I didn't "leave" D&D so much as find and learn games that did what I wanted in a more elegant or even simpler way. Having said that, I do feel that sometimes an RPG can be too simple. That is, I don't find "complex rules" = "hard game", nor do I necessarily find that "rules lite" = "simple...

    Critical Hit Decks/Charts - I don't like 'em

It depends. Rolemaster has the problem of having charts for practically everything, which is why one of the derogatory names for it is "ChartMaster". Its "diet" version, HARP simplifies things by drastically lowering the number of tables, which can lead to sameyness if a GM doesn't change the...

CHALLENGE: Campaigns that NOBODY would want to play in
