    Real Life (TM) Encounter Lengths

Howdy. I read an article not to long ago giving a rule of thumb when determining how man Real Life (TM) hours an encounter would take. It had things like "if you double the number, then the time increases by X." That sort of stuff. Does anyone know where I could find this reference? Thanks...

Old questions revisted [last: Sneak Attack] (Caliban please hop in and help out)

The DM should tell the player if his rogue cannot sneak attack because of non-magical reasons. The main reason sneak attacks work is because the rogue is able to discern vital locations. In other words, the rogue would know if he could discern them and therefore the player should, too. /ds

Charon: Daemon of the Lower Planes and O'Reilly's Pub

Charon, boatman of the lower planes, has a Gather Information of +40. Wow. That's pretty impressive. What does Gather Information do again? Lemme flip through my PHB. Ah yes, here it is. How do you use that check? Ahhh, yes: I see. I guess ol' Charon just paddles his boat down to the...

Rule of Thumb for Balance vs. Reflex

Interesting. That could work. Then the DM has to decide on what situations warrant the Reflex save. As you noted, falling on your bum from failing to walk on slippery ice wouldn't warrant a Reflex save, but trying not to slide over the edge of the cliff after you fell would. I tihnk that is...

Could you explain further. I don't understand what you mean. Thanks. /ds

Rule of Thumb for Balance vs. Reflex

Does anyone have a good rule of thumb that they use when determine Reflex save vs. Balance check? My rule of thumb would be that if it was unexpected, then use a Reflex save, otherwise a Balance check. For example, a giant running across a rope bridge causes it to shake violently. Balance...

    Listen Through Walls

Howdy. I can't find a reference that says how much materials add to listen checks. The listen skill notes that it is +5 through a door and +15 through a stone wall, but it is a far cry from +X/y in. of substance. Using these numbers it would seem easier to hear through wood than stone :)...

    Spider Climb and Jumping

Howdy. If you are on a horse with spider climb active and you are riding past a castle wall, can you jump off your horse and stick to the wall without touching the ground? I think so as long as you make your jump check to cover the distance. No other rolls (climb or otherwise) would be...

    Light Passing through Darkness

That is definitely true. The text of the spell says that if cast on a light source it extinguishes it, or rather nullifies it. But in my example, you have a light source outside of the darkness (such as a bullseye lantern). Keep in mind I'm not arguing one way or the other. But it makes for...

    Expert Tactician and Sneak Attack

I don't buy it. All things you can do in a round are "actions" be them move-equivalent, partial, free, etc. Why add that extra wording if you can take the ET action after you cough? They call it rules-lawyering for a reason I guess. And interpreting "regular" as widely as you do is more of...

    Expert Tactician and Sneak Attack

Which, in fact, does seem to be the case. According to "feinting" in the Bluff skill description, the opponent is denied his Dexterity bonus on your next attack. While I think you will get the other attack from ET, it won't be during the feint and hence no loss of Dexterity. /ds

    Expert Tactician and Sneak Attack

I found this clarification in the Living Greyhawk Living City Campaign Song and Silence Document: This text, although not official, makes it sound like QttE and ET cannot be used together. /ds

    Expert Tactician and Sneak Attack

Could you define for me what is a "regular action"? I'm not familiar with "regular" actions in DND. I'm familiar with full-round actions, standard actions, partial actions, move-equivalent actions, and free actions. /ds

    Light Passing through Darkness

Yeah, sorry about that. I accidentally hit "reply" instead of "new topic". My bad. To answer your other question, darkness is an evocation whereas silence is an illusion (glamer). /ds

    Light Passing through Darkness

Does darkness prevent light from passing through? The silence spell specifically says that it does, but darkness does not. /ds

    Determining EL and XP

Howdy. I'm curious as to how you handle assigning an EL and XP awarded to the following encounter. The Good 4 PCs (L1), 5 NPCs (War1), 1 NPC (Pal2) versus The Bad 2 NPCs (Clr2), 5 NPCs (War1) Pretend that the 4 PCs (L1) were going up against The Good. It is an EL 6 by the numbers. Going...

    Drow Spell-Like Abilities

Then what is the point of the entry in the MM? It doesn't list a class but all of its stats, skills, etc. Is it just bunk, then? I guess I missed the part about humanoids and classes. /ds

    Drow Spell-Like Abilities

The SRD states that the drow's spell-like abilities are cast by a sorcerer of the drow's character level. Does this mean that non-classed drow do not have these abilities? What about a drow Clr1? Thanks. /ds
