    I like D&D

I may wander, I may stray, I may have torrid affairs with GURPS, Mutants & Masterminds, and my wife. But in the end nothing matches playing a badass orc paladin with a greataxe the size of New Jersey. just don't let my wife see this post, :)

    [3.5] WotC motivation revealed!

Actually, given the other business factors in play it's not unreasonable to predict that Wizards is going to release a significant upgrade every three years or so. Getting emotionally distraught by this? That's a bit unreasonable. But I suppose everyone has to have a hobby, even if it's not...

    Any local stores have 3.5?

No, we haven't seen it yet. AFAIK the books are currently in distributor warehouses, and will probably ship out early next week. If all goes well, our copies will arrive Thursday afternoon and be out on sale or in the mail to our mail order folks first thing Friday morning. cheers,

"Back to the Dungeon" aiming for the wrong target?

FWIW, the official slogan on the marketing materials seems to be "Play more!" Which is a sentiment I heartily agree with. :) cheers,

    [3.5] WotC motivation revealed!

Keep in mind that even if they never did another update, they'd still have to print more of the old books. And it's not like they're going to sell *less* of 3.5 than they would of 3.0. Even if nobody at all bought an upgrade copy, the kid who walks into my store in two weeks needing a PHB is...

"Back to the Dungeon" aiming for the wrong target?

All true, rounser, but I think that just points out the flexibility of roleplaying in general and (possibly) the futility of trying to firmly classify any module as a particular fish or fowl. A module may lean towards interaction or towards rock'em sock'em action, but there's always more than...

"Back to the Dungeon" aiming for the wrong target?

<i>Rounser asked if WotC focusing on dungeon crawls is shortsighted...</i> Short answer: no. :) Medium answer: I'm going to be very interested in comparing the reviews and sales of <i>The Last Dance</I> (offbeat puzzleish adventure) and <i>Last Hero in Scandinavia</i> (all out Viking hackfest...

    The problem with FLGS

No, Amazon has posted some profits. It isn't regularly profitable yet, but the combination of merchant services and holiday gift buying has put them over the top a couple of times. (Real profit too, not accounting-tricks profit.) They're pretty much on track to being profitable every quarter...

Why I Love Being the DM

Right now I love ending my <i>M&M</i> sessions with a few "Elsewhere..." panels in which I (usually) introduce next week's villain and hint at the plot. The best part being that half the time the players speculate up a plot I like better than what I already have in mind, so I chuck what I've...

ENnies - let's launch the voting booth!

I gotta say, I'm feeling all tingly about this voting thing! :) Gonna spend a little more time this afternoon perusing the candidates, and then I'll be stuffing... er, I mean, visiting ... the ballot box this evening! Morrus-san: I'm just being nosy, but it would be cool to occasionally hear a...

    The problem with FLGS

Scattershot thoughts... <i>arnwyn</i>: As noted before, I can't say I disagree with your answer. At the very least, I'm now convinced that product stores and play spaces are separate businesses with separate customer bases. They're complementary at best, and one mistake store owners like me are...

    The problem with FLGS

Mostly complaining quietly behind closed doors. :) It's one of those things that it's just not good business to rant about in public. That said, I'm in a smaller camp of retailers that thinks publishers should be doing <b>more</b> PDFs. Products have a life cycle, and I think one of the biggest...

    The problem with FLGS

I was hoping you'd wander in, Talon-san. I have a feeling you're going have a different take on a number of my rantier statements -- and that your thoughts on the subject are going to be well worth listening to... :) Changing subject to something Rel said.. I'm kind of leaning towards your...

    3.5 Price Increase

There have been some times when I've been tempted to export myself to Mexico. I haven't done enough financial homework to make any decisions, but the combination of U.S. writing income and a low local cost of living might prove to be interesting. cheers,

    The problem with FLGS

speaking of subscription/membership models... This is an interesting way to do it. (Netflix is undoubtedly old news to lots of folks here, but there's some fascinating stuff in this piece about how they've made operations more efficient and how much growth has been going on in recent months.)...

    The problem with FLGS

You know, I'm actually going to agree with you on that one. I am now intrigued, because what you're saying makes literally no sense to me. Okay, let me try to parse this. Are you saying that I should be charging occasional customers a "membership fee" for the privilege of purchasing in my...

    Tome of Horrors II

Mmm, tasty. Speaking as a guy who really owns too many critter books... I'm always up for another critter book. :)

    The problem with FLGS

It's not so much a matter of taking it personally. I just find you irritating. I also think your assumptions are terrible, that your logic is ridiculous, and that you're trying to apply something you've only half-learned to real-world situations you know nothing about. But it really isn't...

    The problem with FLGS

Yeah, that was just a teensy bit over the top. :) Point most enthusiastically taken. The economists I like are more like naturalists -- they describe interesting fauna and flora and breed fruit flies to learn more about the rules of the ecosystem (econsystem?). It's the ones that like to...

    The problem with FLGS

Okay, I've really gone off the deep end this time... (edited slightly to insert a couple of missing words and correct a mistyped number) Yes, I understood you. The problem is the same as the product margins, though -- the customer base is too small and too diverse in its spending patterns for...
