D&D 5E (2014) This is the end, my beautiful friend (?) - or endgame in 5e

I like very high level play a lot - it a a real change of pace and mindset from lower level D&D. Like others in this thread I got to level 20 in 4e - actually we are 30th level and the campaign is not finished. 4e is the only edition where I have done so legitimately. The system just works well...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you measure, and enforce, alignment?

Alignment is not a big issue at my 5e table (but then again I havent seen alignment as being important since 2e). It is not used by the DM to rule on behavior. I have no idea what alignment my fellow PCs are - they all play as kinda Neutral Good. Race, Class, region and Bonds are more important...

    D&D 5E (2014) Thud The RPG A 5E Hack

This looks interesting. I like the idea but why cut things back so dramatically? Id be interested to see this with more choices of class. Given that race plays a small part, inst there a danger of having characters around the table that are essentially the same? Also thats a lot of hp for first...

D&D 5E (2014) Would having an AC Save (similar to DEX Save) be a good or terrible idea?

Yes traps made the attack. In 4e the attacking creature or trap always rolled whether it was a melee, ranged attack or spell. The rolled attack targeted either the AC, reflex, willpower or fortitude defences depending upon the type of attack. Saving throws only existed if you had been hit by an...

D&D 5E (2014) Would having an AC Save (similar to DEX Save) be a good or terrible idea?

I think it is too complicated. I actually prefer it to be like 4e: the attacker always rolls no matter the type of attack.

D&D 5E (2014) To own 5E books or not to own 5E books that is the Question

I agree that if you play the game you should buy the book. But the issue is that you dont really need the PhB to play 5E. Only spell casters in my group really use it in play. If you play a fighter you only really need to check the PhB when you level up.

D&D 5E (2014) How valuable is the shield?

10% of the time it works all of the time. Or at least that is what my barbarian PC tells my Paladin buddy.

D&D 5E (2014) Why wimpy SLING damage and range?

Isnt there also an issue of accuracy at short ranges (sub 60 feet). Wouldnt it be easier to hit a target with a bow or cross bow in this range than a sling? Most of (really great) references above as in respect to massed long range attacks rather than shorter ranges.

D&D 5E (2014) Need help dealing with two bard campaign

So true. There is one bard in my party and one is more than enough! Everything in life for a bard is skill check of some sort.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts On How To Do High Level Adventures.

Some good ideas here. I think one important direction is to revisit solo monsters/ legendary monsters/ lair actions and make them much tougher. I think you could really push PCs with monsters with multiple actions/reactions without having to have mass fights with 136 purple worms, etc. Also I...

D&D 5E (2014) So What Books Does Your Group Own?

The DM has one of each of the core books and a few of the adventures. The five players share one PHB. I dont think we are helping Hasbro shareholders!

D&D 5E (2014) Will your campaign be purely adventuring?

Probably not. Personally I would like it, but I not sure that there is enough mechanical support for it in recent editions. I also think there is a brute practicality of collaborative play, that if we can get people to play we want to be adventuring, not be doing accounting and administration.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Greyhawk is Loved

I really like GH but I have only played the original setting back in the 80s. I have read the 3E era/From the ashes stuff, and I think this builds on the strengths of GH. I have always liked the way GH combines traditional sword&sorcery with high magic. The big one for me is that the villains...

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor Classic Modules: THE SINISTER SECRET OF SALTMARSH WINS!

The U series is a worthy winner. I played U1 a couple of times and it was always good. U3 is one the toughest adventures I have seen in play.

D&D 5E (2014) Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

I didnt have that experience either in 4e. We had a couple of Encounters 6 or more levels fights at higher than our level that were just crazy (but yes, the combats took forever in 4e especially at epic). The point is that in 4e it worked and it could work in 5e. You just have to be willing to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Cleric

I like 5e clerics. The domains have a really big impact on play. I have played a life cleric and tempest cleric and they play differently with the tempest being more damaging in combat. Then again even the life cleric I played was handy in battle at lower levels. The only beef I have the...

D&D 5E (2014) Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

This squares with my experience, especially of 1e and 2e. I also gave up playing 3.5 at about 13th level, magic just overpowered everything. But I should say that played 4e right up to 30th level and it played fine. I mean fights were really, really, really slow! But it all worked mathematically...
