    D&D 5E (2014) When to Roll Initiative

I would probably still do initiative. Maybe the dragon runs before the attack goes off.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Mutliverse and Time

Is that from 3rd or 4th edition? Never heard of it. I won't be using that in my games. 3rd and 4th edition got the planes really, really wrong as far as I am concerned.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Mutliverse and Time

That would work pretty well in most cases. The only problem I see with that is if you have a multiplanar campaign that bounces between worlds very rapidly, e.g. Spelljammer. Then the discrepancies would become difficult to manage...almost impossibly so if you have characters on different worlds...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Mutliverse and Time

I think a nice cheat to keep the various calendars in sync in the long term would be to make each world's year the same duration despite containing a different number of days. This means the days are not really quite the same length but the differences would be miniscule, e.g. comparing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

    Usually "Ow!", or sometimes "S***!"

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Ok, that makes sense. I was trying to puzzle out how the disadvantage carried over after the Bard became visible and thinking I had missed some subtle point in the rules. :p

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Off topic, but what are the mechanics granting disadvantage here? I understand disadvantage against an unseen opponent, but wouldn't holding an attack against an unseen opponent until after they give away their location mean the attacker is no longer unseen, negating the disadvantage?

    D&D 5E (2014) Twinned Elemental Affinity

I'm confused. Your reply sounds like you disagree with me, but the gist of your reply seems to agree. I think the elemental affinity should be applied to each target. Anything else makes no common sense. If rules make no sense (or only make sense on a meta level), they don't belong in the game...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation: Leaving Slots Open

It seems reasonable that since the PHB gives the amount of time it takes to prepare your spells that the process could (however unlikely) be interrupted. So, what happens when a DM decides a wizard's spell preparation has been interrupted? Does he get nothing, or does he get a partial list? The...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

What I find arbitrary about that particular example is that the reasoning is purely metagame. Coming up with an in game reason for the difference is an exercise in rationalization, and therefore to be avoided (in my games). Slot requirements? No idea what you are referring to. I've not played...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

Pretty much all I do as a DM when looking at rules is try to discern why they exist and if they are in fact "good rules". I am always open to a serious discussion and welcome any thoughts you have on the matter. I have looked at the items in the DMG in depth (many of them have changed very...

    D&D 5E (2014) citadel of the planes - thoughts?

That's pretty much what I was saying. I don't think those rules are bad, just a little blunt with room for improvement.

    D&D 5E (2014) citadel of the planes - thoughts?

I don't think I'm exaggerating much. Consider the Nine Hells: OPTIONAL RULE: PERVASIVE EVIL Evil pervades the Nine Hells, and visitors to this plane feel its influence. At the end of each long rest taken on this plane, a visitor that isn't evil must make a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw. On a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Twinned Elemental Affinity

I consider twinned spells entirely separate spells. My take is two separate attack rolls and separate damage rolls, with affinity applied to each. Elemental affinity is supposed to represent the character being able to do increased damge with a particular type of magic because of his draconic...

    D&D 5E (2014) citadel of the planes - thoughts?

I think there are better ways of making the planes unique without beating the characters over the head with alignment changes, which tend to make players annoyed, and make their characters act like psychotic cardboard cutouts. Still, it could be entertaining in small doses - like a demon who...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

It's not horribly restrictive. I just see no real value in the rule that can't also be solved in simpler, less prescriptive ways. It is a hard limit on items which use attunement. For completeness, it is listed in the PHB in the description of the Greater Restoration, Identify, and Remove...

    D&D 5E (2014) citadel of the planes - thoughts?

It sounds pretty cool. I'll bet it's expensive beyond imagination to construct though. The 5th edition alignment bending outer planar effects are optional rules. I don't recommend them, at least not in general. Perhaps applied only in certain domains or under special circumstances they would be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

The scepter sounds fun, although I would argue that item user restrictions are a separate issue entirely, especially for intelligent or storied items. Your story even indicates that you didn't have the character simply spend a short rest with the item - as per attunement rules. So I would argue...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

...and I find the mechanism (attunement) used to prescribe those limits to be clunky and ineffective. I am perfectly capable of running a balanced campaign without resorting to a rule I feel limits characters in arbitrary (almost video-game like) ways. If you feel I have overlooked some...
