D&D 4E Is It Time to Look at 4E Again?

Did you take a look at the DMG2? I found it to be better than the already excellent DMG1. Better crunch and better advice, especially with designing interesting encounters. The MMs also keep getting better. If you have enough disposable income, grab the DMG2 and look for MM3 monsters in DDI...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

After the whole thing was roughly outlined at GenCon, this article isn't a huge surprise - but it's nice to see it explained in detailed with their reasoning behind it. And the bit about the sale price is pretty nice too - didn't expect that. Very happy about the change overall - seems to give...

OMG Nightmare player Help advice pls

Yeppers. I'd try to talk to the DM - carefully and polite... but if you're unwilling to do, the discussion ends on a negative note or nothing changes in the next game, then leave the game as it is. Keep in touch with the people, perhaps you can start your own group with some of the players etc...

    Mike Mearls Ruined Everything

Eh, it's the humble d100 roll, especially the second d10 (y'know, the one with 00, 10, 20, etc.). Not enough random tables, nowadays! Cheers, LT.

...is it wrong to love the alien X-Files background music in the video? :D Cheers, LT.

    2 person party Advice

From my experiences in my campaign with the companion dwarf fighter... the companion defender ability (mark on hit) is terrible. We've replaced it with the defender aura from the Essentials preview (in a nutshell: all enemies adjacent to the companion are marked by it). Works like a charm...

Lax editing standards as long as updates are free?

Also, apart from the awesomeness that Sue Cook is, Monte is, well, one guy. Professional gaming books are often collaborative efforts - that increases the chances for miscommunication, misunderstandings, clashing schedules etc. Working in a two-person team (i.e. author + editor) with the layout...

    Essentials Magic Missile

Actually, the MM1 does imply it, there are several examples: The Angel of Valor is a level 8 standard monster, but there are higher level minion versions of it (level 11, 16, 21). Together with the description that they are the rank-and-file angels, I think it's not too far-fetched to think...

    Essentials Magic Missile

Well, then it's obviously not a minion! In fact, a level 35 minion is worth 11,750 XP; compare to the level 19 solo: 12,000 XP. So, XP-wise (and hence power-wise) they're roughly equivalent - meaning the level 1 character would see the Daikaiju Citystomper as a level 19 solo. Or as a level 24...

C4, the Best Edition Never Published

Oh man, this *is* a huge copyright violation! This said, I do dig your idea - collecting a "best of" of all 4E material, updating/errata-ing and putting it together would be amazing (and one could fix expertise/defence feats in the same go or chuck out unbalanced or weird stuff)... but...

Upgradeable Powers - Useful outside Themes?

Not to mention that it gives characters the possibility to have "iconic" powers they keep throughout their career and I think it would have even freed up a bit of space in the books (since some powers are just "upscaled" versions of lower level powers, like Stinking Cloud -> Cloudkill or Come...

Upgradeable Powers - Useful outside Themes?

So... Dark Sun Themes have a selection of powers that have upgraded versions summarised as rather concise entry, allowing players to keep the theme-powers until the end. Does anybody else wish they would have done that for all powers in 4e? Especially with the opportunity that Essentials gave...

    Essentials Only Campaigns

Furthermore, the Essentials seem to form a very solid base (whereas some PHB1 stuff was... well, very boring without the supplements) of enjoyable stuff that's "classic" in them. It's a good basic framework to say "Essentials only, everything needs to get vetted first" than "this bit of PHB1...

    Essentials - calling a spade a spade

Jupp, that's pretty much why Essentials isn't a 4.5e or 4e Revised to me: It's not obsoleting any previous material. 3.5e made your old books wrong, Essentials won't touch my PHB1. Errata is something else for me, mainly because it's free and does not necessitate the purchase of anything in...

    The D&D Boss Fight

Interesting - though I think the example (Bloodknuckes) short-sells the idea a bit. The suggestion of replacing the middle part of the encounter with something else entirely (pursuit skill challenge, minions etc.) is a lot more interesting. Nice job of breaking down the problem and pointing out...

    D&D outside the U.S.

Yeah, I'd really wish somebody would pick up the 4e license again, especially with Essentials coming soon - would make a nice entry point for people. Cheers, LT.

    2 person party Advice

Alternatively, the classes with strong leanings towards a secondary role work pretty well, too. In a two-player campaign, my players played a Warlock and a Paladin. Since Warlocks have a controller-y bent and the Paladin a Leader-ish one, they were able to handle a lot of stuff pretty well. For...

    New previews!!!

Huh, missed this thread! Pretty! Despite having (not) enough minis for most sorts of encounters, I really like the counters coming with the Monster Vault - convenient for travel and so on... and pretty enough to not feel cheap, especially with the bloodied back. Not sure about the DM's kit, it...

    Modron Modron Mooooodroooon!

Modrons! Happy to see that they're well beloved out there, especially the DiTerlizzi incarnation. Ditto for the Dragon incarnation (one of the last print Dragons) - all the new concepts sound like an interesting way to update and integrate them, though I'm wondering what my become of "the Great...

    How will you incorporate Essentials?

Pretty much this, though I'd allow full rebuilds if it makes sense (e.g the Warlock in my group spent quite a lot of feats to be a decent melee combatant, should the Essentials warlock provide a lot of support for such a build, I'd gladly allow a retooling to match my player's concept better)...
