D&D 5E (2014) Knock Unconscious and Massive Damage

Yeah, that was more or less the thought process I followed. But at the same time I wanted to go through a route like what Iserith describes, as it seemed odd that the rogue, an expert assassin, would be unable to at least gauge/control his own strikes. But since the rules do not allow for...

D&D 5E (2014) Knock Unconscious and Massive Damage

In our case, we were playing last Saturday and they rogue had infiltrated the Burgomeister's mansion to find out who was kidnapping women from the poor side of town: Rogue: "I hurry through the bushes and try to knock the stable boy unconcious with the handle of my blade. I'll use the auto-crit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lord Cupcake's Will

Not even Cwell the Magnificent would dare laugh at Lord Cupcake! Or probably he would. But he shouldn't. He most certainly shouldn't.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Board Game style Release Schedule

Although my collector/compulsive buyer side is going bananas for more books, my rational side is perfectly happy with the game so far. I can see myself playing with what's available + my own homebrews for several years.

D&D 5E (2014) Knock Unconscious and Massive Damage

Ohh, I think I found my problem: I had mistakenly assumed the rules for Massive Damage were the same for PCs as they were for NPCs, yet the ones described in the DMG are different and indeed allow for stealth attacks to be useful without outright murder involved. Thank you very much!

D&D 5E (2014) Knock Unconscious and Massive Damage

Aye, I'm with you there: If players try for alternatives other than outright murder, I like to encourage that. My interpretation was that the Massive Damage still applies even when trying to knock someone out, representing the inherent danger of hitting too hard and killing the victim by...

D&D 5E (2014) Knock Unconscious and Massive Damage

Last weekend I ran into a problem: The party's rogue wanted to knock people out quick and assuredly by using his Assassinate feature to both sneak attack and auto-crit, in order to make sure he reduced the victims down to 0. However, this often meant he would deal twice the target's HP in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lord Cupcake's Will

Page 36 of the 5e DMG reads: "Travok and Kairon don't want to undertake a quest for Lord Cupcake" What's with these uppity heroes dismissing quests from Lord Cupcake? Would have they done the same if Duke Smoothy or Count Hors d'Oeuvres had been involved? I think not. The biggest question...

    GM Problems: Table Space

I completely eschewed the notebook for a tablet. Though it's not as friendly to handle with multiple things like the former, the amount of space it saves is too much to ignore. For 3.5/Pathfinder (which until 5e's release occupied most of my roleplaying schedule) I use the tablet to handle...

    [Boardgame] Republic of Rome

Has anyone else played this game? Republic of Rome is a boardgame that puts up to 6 players in control of a political faction of Republican Rome. Through these factions, players attract and manipulate senators (as well as their retinues) which in turn are used to run the Republic, be it by...

[March 2015] What Are You Reading?

I recently started reading Codex Alera III: Cursor's Fury, by Jim Butcher. A very entertaining series so far, mixing action and politics in a fantasy world with similitudes to the Roman Empire (apparently, Butcher wrote it after being challenged to make a good story involving two horrible or...

    Is D&D "Rubbish"?

I think that D&D has become sort of a genre of its own, with its own tropes, assumptions, and expectations. And I'd argue there's no better game for running D&D than, well, D&D. And I sure love me some D&D.

    Ernest Gary Gygax (July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008)

Thank you, Gary, for all the adventures and endless hours of fun. Thanks to your work and that of Dave Arneson I've met some of the most valuable people in my life, had some of the most memorable experiences, and encountered an entire world of awe-inspiring imagination that has had such a deep...

Do you allow electronics at your gaming table?

I used to avoid electronics on the table, but now I let everyone use iPads to keep track of stuff and check the rules. I still ask them to use print character sheets, however. As the DM, I use them constantly now. Being able to roll initiative every single turn without a hassle is great.

What things do you miss from D&D?

I miss having lots and lots of different settings to choose from. Since I DM a lot of Planescape, the large variety of worlds in the AD&D era meant an ever-expanding range of posibilities, and I've always been a sucker for setting guidebooks and atlases. Boxed sets I'm more ambivalent. On one...

    World of Sand

Geographical availability is a very important factor in this. You could arguably have waterstone in hard-to-reach or otherwise unknown locations, allowing for life to florish or at leats subsist, while still keeping it extremely valuable within civilized lands. A good example of how this works...
