    D&D 4E The 'Big 6' in 4e

I would be ecstatic if the amount of magic items in D&D dropped. I've quit playing with some DMs because they give out magic items like candy. In many cases it really does become an issue of "I've got great gear" instead of "I've got a great character." I'd much rather play a great character.

    Class- Role- Power Source

I find it so interesting that despite the fact that Rangers have had divine spells since AD&D no one wants to call them Divine Strikers. Ranger were pegged as Strikers in the roles video, and they've had divine spells for 20+ years, I don't think that's going away. The Druid was pegged as a...

    Current Theories on Classes?

That's mostly because in the video that first detailed the roles, it was also explicitly stated that they were also "experimenting with classes the don't quite fit so neatly into party roles," (i.e. all the one's they'd worked on before fit neatly into party roles (i.e. the core classes fill one...

PC Roles (New Design and Development Article)

New PC roles article: "Unlike their 3e counterparts, every Leader class in the new edition is designed to provide their ally-benefits and healing powers without having to use so many of their own actions in the group-caretaker mode. A cleric who wants to spend all their actions selflessly will...

SAGA Jedi, spells/maneuvers only once per encounter: in or out?

Only trouble is that's an excessive amout of book keeping. One per encounter is smoother and easier to track, as you mentioned. Also, in Saga with certain talents, you can spend actions to regain some powers, a natural 20 on a Use the Force check gets you your powers back, and spending a force...

SAGA Jedi, spells/maneuvers only once per encounter: in or out?

In Saga there's also the Use the Force skill. A few people have commented in other threads about how it might be the direction 4th Edition is going, just swap out UtF for Spellcraft and away you go. With just the UtF skill you can project a small object at a target (to-hit roll) and cause...

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Design - New Article

I play M&M frequently and I think that might be one way to think of the new Minion rules. These are OGL rules from M&M. MINIONS Minions are minor characters subject to special rules in combat, and generally easier to defeat than normal characters. The following rules apply to minions: •...

    Disdain for new fantasy

The amount of role-playing involved in any game is entirely determined by those at the table during the game. The system has nothing to do with it. As far back as OD&D (back when Dwarf was a class) there was role-playing, yet, magically there were no rules (crunchy bits) covering how to...

Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

Yes, I might be. And to clarify, I work in regular book publishing, not game publishing. I have done layout and design work for mostly straight text filled books with little use of pictures. The schedule I gave is the standard for that style of layout, i.e. no pictures. I can only imagine how...

    Skills?

The other way to go is Non-Class: 1/4, Class: 1/2, Trained: 1/1 (no bonus), and keep Skill Focus as a feat providing a +5 bonus. Not sure which way I like better.

Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

I'm thinking along the lines of the previous poster who said the community playtest is more likely a marketing scheme to boost word-of-mouth (like they need it at this point) and/or playtesting specific things, like is this monster really a CL8, or something simple and non book changing like that.

New "which 8 classes are in PHB" speculation thread

The warlord is mentioned all over the place on these boards. There is a screen cap from the presentation given at GenCon from the character generator that's part of D&DI. Also, check the YouTube Video from GamerZer0 labelled Roles. Do your own leg work.

    Skills?

Currently in SAGA all skills gain a 1/2 level bonus. Then there's trained and focused. This works for class and non-class skills. As noted above, that doesn't quite work out. Here's how I think it will go in 4th... Non-class skills checks: d20 + 1/4 character level + ability modifier. Class...

    Skills?

Bonner's new blog lists his chaos gnome as having 16 Bluff, here. And before people freak about skill ranks or Saga skills. We don't know exactly what that means. Besides, this is a converted character instead of a start fresh, 1st level character, so there's no telling what level he is.

Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

I work in publishing. Here's the break down of a books schedule. Lets work backwards... Time from delivery of files to printer for the book to hit the shelves = 3 months. This is mostly due to delivering the full-color book from China where most full-color printing is done now (watch out for...
