    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

For the sake of being apples to apples, using point buy a SS's AC will be just about as good as a fighter with a shield at inception. Con will only be your 3rd stat. However, our con bonus plus warcaster plus our SS bonus to concentration saves will make it rather difficult to fail a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

At the end of the day a Bladesinger in melee offers perhaps 70% of the offensive capability of a fighter and probably 130% of the defensive capabilities of a fighter with a full 9 levels of spells thrown in for kicks. I feel like there's a bit too much focus on the fact that the Spellsinger's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is a CR 30 monster a suitable challenge for a 20th level party?

Non-life threatening pretty well describes 5E, which, while I rather like the edition overall, is one of my primary criticisms. I feel as though a combat encounter that doesn't risk the lives of those participating isn't particularly thrilling or fun. It's more or less an encounter not worth having.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is a CR 30 monster a suitable challenge for a 20th level party?

Four lv 20 PCs that are experienced and well kitted out with magical items would have a hell of a fight on their hands, but I it's doable. I've always found CRs to be rather conservative. What the game calls a "moderate challenge" is something that the players will basically be able to snooze...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improved Invisibility vs Haste

AC17 seems a bit arbitrary. What's your attack bonus relative to this AC? I was rather hoping to distill hard answers out statistically though I realize this has more variables than asking something like "what is the stat benefit of advantage based on relative AC and attack bonus." In this...

D&D 5E (2014) Do most striker builds weaken a party?

I don't entirely disagree with you. Initially it bothered me as well since it harkened to WOW or 4th edition which, without wanting to start a flame war...lets just say it wasn't my cup of tea at all. With that said, I do rather like efficiency, and the use of these terms allows us to sum up the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improved Invisibility vs Haste

Good to know. I missed that part of the verbiage. So that brings us to the question of advantage on our attack(s) vs extra attack, and in which circumstances one is statistically better than the other.

    D&D 5E (2014) Improved Invisibility vs Haste

I guess I probably should have specified that the intended wearer of this spell is a melee gish, so again, aside from the possible ability to slip away better, the enemy will generally know which square I'm in. Of course, depending on how we're ruling attacks of opportunity, I may be able to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improved Invisibility vs Haste

Defensively, I think it's clear that disadvantage on enemy attacks is at least as good, if not in most cases better than the +2 to AC Haste offers us. On the other hand, offensively, in what situations do we prefer advantage on our existing attacks versus an extra attack? I would imagine this...

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

A combo of mechanical and thematic. I wouldn't put together a character that is subpar any more than I would want to run a character that doesn't fit the kind of character I'm envisioning. It's a synergy between the two. Something interesting to consider however...stats optimizing as a tool for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a Champion/ Rogue

I believe where you and he are seeing this differently is that he is assuming that you must declare which of your attacks will be the sneak attack ahead of time, whereas what I've assumed, and it appears you do as well, is that I would complete my attack rolls first, and if I critted, I would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Not liking Bounded Accuracy

I don't really understand why anyone would prefer a character's method of advancement be so completely focused on numerical improvements rather than gaining flavorful new abilities that make us stronger. Sure stats have got to play a part, but I very much like how they've taken a backseat in 5E.

D&D 5E (2014) Settings played in D&D: cause or effect?

I played FR as the primary setting back in the golden age of campaign setting variety in 2E. The reason? Other settings were theme parks that I may have found entertaining as a change of pace, but no other setting felt as much like a fully fleshed out living world as Toril. I started out in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I don't get your dislike of a bladesinger as a bladesinger. It's only going to be short 1 attack compared to a traditional fighter until 20th level, and while it may not get a fighter's special abilities, it makes up for this with a full 9 levels of spells. Sure, the Bladesinger will be a bit...

D&D 5E (2014) Do most striker builds weaken a party?

I'm sure they would be effective, but largely because there are no tanks. In 5E there are few glass cannons really so I feel as though that's not the right term exactly. What I thing is true however, is that in regards to the defensive capabilities of each class, you have blockers and...

D&D 5E (2014) Do most striker builds weaken a party?

After rolling up characters for a new campaign the other day we ended up with two tanky charaters with respectable damage output (myself as a battlemaster/abjurer and a paladin), backed up by two glass cannons, a warlock and a ranger with a bow. It occurred to me that while the ranger will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Something to think about regarding mirror image vs blur. While blur does require concentration, and I would say at lower levels mirror image may be a hands down winner, the trouble with it is that the AC isn't your AC, but 10+ your dex. So at higher levels when you have a much stronger AC but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a Champion/ Rogue

Which will provide us with the best crit damage output when crit threat range, # of attacks, and sneak attack damage are all figured in? I am figuring on a full 20th level character but humor me. The more levels we put into champion the lower our sneak attack damage, but the more likely we will...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

A dex based fighter makes a lot more sense overall to me. 2 handed weapon focused fighters aside, a rapier matches the damage output of the best one handed strength based weapons. Sure, in terms of AC plate armor will be better than a 20 dex (which you could have by 6th level using point...

D&D 5E (2014) Best FR novels of all time?

I'm currently in the middle of re-reading Homeland. Man what a great novel. I still enjoy the new ones, but they just don't write em like that anymore.
