D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

I like the weird world building of B/X alignment. There is a Cosmic Force of Law and a Cosmic Force of Chaos, and even one of Neutrality (high Tanelorn). If you align yourself with one that has a supernatural effect and your connection to that cosmic force means you can communicate with them in...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

B/X only has alignment languages as an alignment mechanic that I remember. BECMI has companion level class options that have alignment limitations IIRC.

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

For alignment languages I like basic law chaos neutral over nine cosmic languages. Cosmic Law and Chaos are archetypically cool forces to tap into and three factions is a useful number for identifying friends from foes and communicating with cosmic forces faction allies. It supports a chaos...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

4e. It has no mechanics that I remember tied to alignment, it was purely descriptive. 5e is close, I like the nine grid better than 4e’s five spectrum. But it has a few minor mechanical things tied to alignment like some magic item effects. 3e had my favorite alignment mechanics with spells...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I think the reference is that clerics and MUs cannot use spears or polearms to help out from the second rank with extra melee attack, not that they cannot hire henchmen.

I do like the literary tropes as archetypes for fey.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

There were lots of magic swords, not so many axes. Thieves could use long swords just like fighters. That was part of the balancing, light armor thieves being able to use magic swords while armored clerics could not. I don’t think it was enough, but it was there as a factor.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

In TSR D&D that actually depends on the specifics of the edition and DM campaign set up choices. Moldvay Basic: "Each magic-user and elf has a spell book for the spells that he or she has learned. A first level character will only have one spell (a first level spell) in the spell book. A...
