    D&D 5E (2014) Sword & Sorcery vs. Heroic Fantasy

I guess its natural to try and define the genre before discussing rules. That said, I think the intent of listing "Heroic Fantasy" for Toril, and "Sword & Sorcery" for Oerth in the DMG was probably to divide the genres between "high magic and fantastical" and "low magic and gritty." Assuming...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sword & Sorcery vs. Heroic Fantasy

Thanks for the responses folks. If I remember correctly, the original Grey Box Forgotten Realms felt darker, grittier, and more low-magic than later Realms material as well.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sword & Sorcery vs. Heroic Fantasy

Hi all, Pages 38 - 39 of the 5E DMG talk about Heroic Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery as two different flavors of fantasy (along with Epic and Mythic). Page 68 of the DMG notes that Toril (Forgotten Realms) is Heroic-Fantasy setting while Oerth (Greyhawk) is a Sword & Sorcery setting. During the...

    Free RPG Day Round Up

No worries, Steve. Sorry to just now reply, but I missed checking back in on this part of the forums for a response for several days. I have long been a supporter of and advocate for C&C, and remember lengthy and heated arguments on the forums during its initial development and playtesting...

    Free RPG Day Round Up

No worries Steve. Since the original C&C playtests - when (and when NOT) to add level to checks has been a constant discussion in my gaming group, and also on various forums - So it is one thing I am always specifically looking for in published material. P. 16 of the 6th Printing PHB actually...

    Free RPG Day Round Up

Thanks for the Free RPG day module. One thing I noticed about it was that there is a situation early in the module where a Fighter uses a DEX check to sneak down a hill and his level is added to the check. Based on all of the years I have played C&C, I have always been under the impression that...

D&D 4E Good adventure that shows 4E's strengths?

Hi folks, I have a couple of players that are interested in having me DM for them, and I think I would like to use 4E. Years ago, they played through the initial parts of Keep on the Shadowfell when it first came out, and formed the opinion that 4E was fun, but nothing more than a 'glorified...

D&D 5E (2014) First experience using the speed factor initiative variant

There were a couple of items that were brought up in my gaming group when the idea of using the variant initiative system in the DMG (and we haven't used it yet as a result). One player mentioned that movement is not a calculated modifier along with Weapon Speed and Spellcasting Times, so...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gnome Fighter with Partisan

Thanks for the tip from a fellow Austinite Hriston. I like that idea. Looks like the Goblin on p.7 of the 5E PHB is also carrying a partisan - Poor little guy is gonna have disadvantage to attack with any of the weapons with reach actually listed in the PHB.

    D&D 5E (2014) Gnome Fighter with Partisan

I was looking in my 1E PHB (P.13), and there is a picture of a Gnome in armor fighting a giant snake with a what looks to be a partisan. With all of the options out there, is there any way to recreate that character in 5E without disadvantage on every attack role with a polearm - due to his...

    D&D 5E (2014) So.... hide?

If the Rogue is hiding behind the friendly Fighter, does he have to move (at least 5') out from behind the fighter in order to shoot his bow at an enemy? If so, is he still hidden when he moves out from behind the fighter?

    D&D 5E (2014) The 5E Art is Awesome

Other than the cover and the condition art (which I absolutely love), I felt that the art in the PHB was very disappointing. Particularly the halfling and tiefling art, but most of the rest of the book just left me totally uninspired. On a positive note, I think the art in subsequent books has...
