The mechanics to force vampires to drink blood.

It depends on how much you want them to need to feed, but one thought would be that each night they go without drinking at least 1 point of Constitution they gain 1 "negative level". Skipping two nights equals 2 "negative levels". Impose the same sort of penalties that players get while under...

    "Designer's Notes" to be included...

Mixed feelings on this from me. On the one hand, it can be useful for getting into the heart and soul of a rule so that when the text seems vague or slightly contradictory you have built in clarification, but it needs to be used sparingly at best. I could easily see it being a web enhancement...

Which Dragon column(s) would you like to see revived?

What would "I" like to see? Hhmmm.... 1) Voyage of the Princess Ark or the Known World Grimoire (won't happen but want to see it) 2) Giants of the Earth (I really liked these articles, my favorte of the 3.x and beyond articles added) 3) Knights of the Dinner Table (we can always use a reality...

    I hate LA!

What I have done for one campaign is to allow people to play up to a +2 LA race and then use the apprentice rules from 3.0 DMG (with a tweak). Those who play a +1 race get the apprentice version of their class. Those with a +2 get an even more modified version of their class spread across the...

Adventuring in the Caves of Chaos

For the EL affecting XP angle, I am guessing that the previous poster's comment was misunderstood. I don't know how you calculated the XP given with regards to CR, but I have seen your previous threads like this and have faith Q that you are doing it properly. His point though I think is that...

Adventuring in the Caves of Chaos

Treasure and XP seem about right to me. Got to remember that this wasn't a simple one off plotted adventure. KotB is a lot more like a mini-campaign. It takes several sessions in either edition to complete and the body count among PCs can be high unless they are very careful. With a party of 6...

    GENre Weekly Update

Thought I would share with everyone some of the interesting bits from the E-Newsletter I receive called GENre Weekly from the still young science fiction/fantasy network called GENre (check local listings): A sad bit of news for Billie Piper fans. For the Record tells us that the smashingly...

    A "Rare Magic" Idea

This is a very good idea. :) Defining various styles and elements to make high quality, masterwork items is a great idea. You can group various effects and bonuses under differing techniques and create a situation where you get things like, "That's no militiaman's blade. That sword was forged...

Anyone have some Variant Fighter Ideas?

Nycarus, thanks for the summary and helping me avoid the horrors of that other thread. And Greg, I do like your ideas and I think they will serve as some additional inspiration for me in coming up with more variants. And while I am at it, Dagger, thanks for the summary from the Dragon I...

Anyone have some Variant Fighter Ideas?

Thanks for the offer. I would be very interested. I love the ideas of minor class variants to present ideas and tweaks instead of everything being a prestige class. I look forward to seeing them.

Anyone have some Variant Fighter Ideas?

Hey all. In doing a bit of prep for a campaign I am intending to run in a few months I am looking into changing about a few things. And one of the things is the Fighter class. Instead of just using the standard Fighter class, I am thinking about allowing only Variant Fighters to be used. These...

Which mass combat systems do you use for D&D game?

For my part I have gone back and forth between two methods depending on the nature of the campaign in question. I use either the mass combat rules from GURPS Conan for campaigns that only rarely have a major battles to resolve. If it is an ongoing war or series of campaigns I use the War...

    Bargle Beyond the Red Box

Here is the truth behind that introductory scenario from the Mentzer Basic Red Box of D&D and the two notable NPC's of that adventure; Aleena and Bargle. The young warrior from that introductory solo adventure is meant to be inspired and traumatized by that dark moment when Aleena was slain and...

Looking for worthwhile Swashbuckler & Noble/Aristocrat classes. Any suggestions?

Arkhandus, CRGreathouse, thanks for the links to the Aristocrat/Noble options. I find them both interesting and think combining those with what I have scrounged up from Fading Suns d20 I think I can come up with something that will appeal to me for a Lankhmar based campaign. Also Arkhandus, I...

    Magic missile too strong?

I have just researched the rule we are disputing, but I have issues with the way the rule is currently writtten and have to say I disagree with it. I have written in for a clarification of what is stated in the text and errata and asked for an explanation for the modifiers are what they are...

    Magic missile too strong?

I myself wouldn't apply an additional -4 penalty to the attack roll because of the opponent. Melee combat is generally very fluid and the initial -4 penalty on shooting into combat represents the "cover" provided by your ally. Otherwise you could take the shot normally but instead have a chance...

Looking for worthwhile Swashbuckler & Noble/Aristocrat classes. Any suggestions?

I have been very unimpressed with the Swashbuckler base class given in the Complete Warrior. I saw there was one linked in the class summary sticky and it looked interesting. I remembered there being some more variants posted here, but I wandered all the way back through the House Rules threads...

    Magic missile too strong?

I did include the penalty for firing into melee into my calculations. That's why the sample wizard in my example has a To-Hit bonus of +0 at sixth level instead of +4. And I agree they are annoying and risky because you can miss, but you deal more damage.

    Magic missile too strong?

I use random roll for the characters in my game. But for purproses of this discussion here I posted up the needed To-Hit rolls for a fighter and Wizard of equal level against randomly chosen monsters of CR's 6-9; beasts they would normally be facing at their given level. The Wizard only had a...

    -10, Only MOSTLY Dead

Here are my rules for dying straight from my House Rules page: Hovering on Death's Door. Characters normally are staggered from their wounds only at exactly zero hit points. When they go negative, even a negative 1, they fall unconscious. Later, everyone dies at -10 hit points. No variation...
