    Magic missile too strong?

Most Wizard spells don't require a to-hit roll, just a saving throw. Magic Missile is a potent spell, but its reasonable for 1st level too I would say. Its damage is minimal, if guaranteed. I have seen it used over many levels, but I have never been too worried about it. Now at the high end of...

Which DND God would you worship?

I would go with the Cult of 10,000 Gods from Al-Qadim. All gods are simply faces for the many aspects of ther one true god and thus all divine power emanates from a single all empowering deity.

    Grim-n-Gritty: Revised and Simplified

I quite like this system and am plannig to use it for my someday Lankhmar campaign. I was curious though if anyone is familiar with any suggested Alternate Critical Hits systems that could be used with the Grim n' Gritty Rules? Any suggestions or thoughts on this would be great, because at the...

Is 3.x Your Favorite Version of D&D?

I am primarily playing in 3.5 at the moment. But the rules bloat has made creating adventures a pain and a great deal of unneeded complexity and requirements to know three score different variations of skill difficulties and skills rules exceptions that seem to not be balanced in a reasoned and...

Which rules-light RPG system would you recommend?

I suggest WEG's d6 system. The Fantasy d6 book is more of a toolkit than an established out of the box kind of game, but it is easy to learn, cinematic, and fun to play. I would say it is one of the easiest systems to learn that is currently out there. Depending on their ages you could also go...

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

What is harder about prep time? Umm.... Everything stat related. How do you use NPC adversaries as stock? Major NPCs require you to go through and choose feats and skills that might be relevant along with appropriate gear and relevant spells or special abilities that will need to be noted. And...

    DuskBlades and Prestige Classes

I would say the Duskblade is unique and specific enough that it shouldn't really need prestige classes. I would say the same thing about the Warlock from Complete Arcane and for the most part the Druid class from the PHB. But that's just me.

    Sorcerer House Rules?

For my part I give them Eschew Material Components and a Bloodline Feat at first level but take away their Familiar. I also give them Survival, Diplomacy, and Intimidate as class skills and have removed the delayed casting time for Metamagic Feats (I see it as intuitive flexability they develop...

    Basic D&D & granularity?

The experience advancement given in the back of the Rules Cyclopedia for advancing to 36th level is a definite option, but the cost is VERY steep, the Magic-User and fighters will still definitely come into their own in comparison.

What did we do before feats, skills, and prestige classes?

Or you could be wrong. In Rules Cyclopedia any character could use a weapon untrained at a -2 to the skill roll. In 1st ed AD&D Magic-Users could use other weapons, but at a -5 penalty. Now in 3.5 the Wizard can snatch up a sword and use it at a -4 penalty. In the newest rules it is...

    Basic D&D & granularity?

It depends on how you plan to do experience and how many sessions the game will last. If you hand out XP each time the PCs retreat back to the Keep so they can take a break from the fun bits in the Caves of Chaos the characters will advance on up the chain and several will be 4th level plus by...

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

In a btb discussion of treasure comparisons you need to include the training rules as a means of eating up the PCs wealth. So that will remove a nice chunk of that hard earned cash. And if you don't get training, you can't advance (as the rules were written). I know many GMs and groups did away...

    Best and Worst of 2005?

Best of 2005? --- Jessica Alba in Fantastic 4. Worst of 2005? --- Everything else in Fantastic 4 (except Victor Von Doom). Gaming wise? GURPS Powers is a Best of definitely.... Worst? Avoid buying stuff I know is bad so I can't specify one (although Legendary Weapons would rank close, its not...

    Suggestions for vanilla campaign setting?

I vote Greyhawk. It's the default setting, the book is full of history and tidbits of knowledge springled all about it, it was made with and for the "core" classes and races. Everything is designed to be run as is right from the go and there have been many different articles in Dragon Magazine...

    Wizard Names

If you want to keep it fairly simple and easy for him, I would suggest an ancient roman, greek, or norse name depending on what image he is wanting to go for. The roman names are the easiest to spell and pronounce as latin is a root language. A few examples from a quick web search...

    Psionic combat

They were. They were just bad in a different way. I like the idea of psionic combat and psionic powers, just never seen it done yet in D&D in a way I like.

Has anyone had new characters roleplay their childhoods?

I never ran a kids adventure as a prelude for a campaign. But in my last 3.5 campaign I ran an adventure for the characters when they had gotten to about 5th level where they encountered a powerful fey spirit that was causing a murderous jealous rage to well up in people. When the player...

Games you were turned off of and why

Heroic isn't Linear. Heroic isn't a bell curve. Heroic is a state of mind. Frodo and Sam were heroic. Odysseus was heroic. Conan had his moments and the Seven Samurai were all heroes. Harry Potter fits the bill too. Heroic deed and action comes in all shapes and sizes. If you have trouble with...
