What makes a successful horror game?

I think the essence of horror is powerlessness, at least in some context and up to a point. Call of Cthulhu is, of course, the big dog in the horror space. Characters typically are not very combat capable, and even if they can hold their own against human opposition, the mythos creatures are...

    Dragonbane general thread

According to other posters Dragon Magic was in the original Drakar och Demoner, so I suspect more a case of ‘save the best for the final push’.

In case anyone didn’t notice and is interested, the cloth maps from previous Dragonbane Kickstarters are available as an add-on to this one. I added them to my pledge as I came in late to the system.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

A game knowing what it is, and a gamer knowing what they want; that is the route to happiness!

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

If you changed that to ‘aspects’ it would be equally useful, however. I tend to agree that Experiences are basically a subset of Aspects, specifically focussed on a character’s experience. And that is perfectly fine. I like Aspects. Their weaknesses (IMO) are: they are all +2, which can make...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

The tip they give (p30) is “In a standard, battle-focused campaign, it's never a bad idea to take your character's first Experience in something that will help with combat and the second Experience in something useful outside of combat. “ Now, that could be ‘knight of such-and-such order’ so...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I find it interesting that the book recommends you make one of your experiences combat-related, but none of the characters in the live play seem to have done that and I don’t see people discussing characters built that way online, either.

D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

Rolemaster is a good example of not-D&D in my book. It has levels and classes, sure, but it’s not D&D in my book. D&D variants probably have six stats, class, level, d20 attack rolls, armour class, saving throws, spells-per-level, HP as the primary measure of damage. By those criteria, 4e is...

    Show your game prep notes

I’m a mind-mapper. This is an example of the session prep for an instalment of my Savage Worlds Lost Colony campaign which ran for about a year. There is more detail at the ends of all those branches on the PCs, NPCs, and other sessions, which I have folded away. But for that specific session...

Yes, in some ways Hope will churn faster as it can be generated by action rolls, where as Stress is only recovered by resting? Or possibly there are abilities that allow Stress to be recovered?

I was reminded by the live-play that once a character is at 0 stress they are Vulnerable. Did that come up?

Interesting that your optimiser thought that Druids were OP but got put down to 0HP. Does that suggest that, in actual gameplay, they are not as over powered as they seem on paper? What do you think based on your play experience?

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Maybe the often stated “it would be a good game if it wasn’t called D&D” trope is playing to DaggerHeart’s advantage here, since it isn’t a D&D branded game.

    RPG Evolution: Eat, Kill, Love

I was going to say similar. Whether that is because it is easier to farm non-predatory animals, or whether that it is because a preditor’s diet might include pathogens more like to harm us, is more difficult to say for sure.

Tomb Raider RPG Cancelled For Creative Differences

I think one of the staff members at the development company was into TTRPGs and released a game of his own writing (with the company’s permission).
