So what 3E adventures were worst?

That's not what I said. If a group is having multiple TPKs in the ToH, then they're the people it was made for. They're not going to have fun, they're supposed to be learning things from their experience. Now, I could see a TPK from bad luck. The 4-armed gargoyle is very tough. But, IIRC...

So what 3E adventures were worst?

If you're having TPKs in the ToH, then you are exactly it's audience. The stuff that will really get you killed or messed up is easy to avoid--it's magical and not an item. Most of the traps are very low-damage or easy to avoid. However, this is only the first 2/3s of the dungeon, my guys...

D&Disms That Make You Go "Huh?"

Since the D&D world contains horrible gods with devout worshippers who commit disgusting acts before breakfast, and demons and devils urging them along, as well as all kinds of cunning and magically adept monsters, I wouldn't worry nearly so much about spells that keep my beer cold.

Jon Tweet - Magic Item Creation

Uh, why would they need to make more? If your history includes thousands of years of magic use by civilization, there should be enough of the more commonly needed sorts of items floating around that it's not too much of problem to find one of what you want for sale by someone. In a city, of...

What would you like to see brought back from older editions?

Ah, we've got a Tomb of Horrors Fallacy here! "My DM did it this way, thus, this is the way [X] works!" The DMG city NPC generation tables only allow for the possibility of "domestic" Wizards up to and no higher than 15th level in Metropolises.

So, what published 3e adventures are you always going to remember?

I'll remember the Sunless Citadel. It's the only published 3e scenario I've ever played in. I'll remember how repetitive the encounters were near the end of the dungeon, how we kept running into a bugbear or goblins with just one or two more people or class levels than we could be absolutely...

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

Also, I think the descriptions of failure and familiarity are pretty clear. Read Greater Teleport carefully. It took me a few times to realize that it doesn't stop you from teleporting somewhere extremely dangerous (BBEG's erupting volcano tower on top of a fault line in the middle of a...

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

Ah, but how long will this take? I'm not talking GI checks, I mean Knowledge (Geography) checks to places flora, fauna, accents, names of cities, inns and buildings. I cannot fathom how this procedure is in any way time-efficient with an hour to cast and 1 minute per level to look around at...

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

Ah, but why do people complain about problems that don't exist, if they would only read the spells? Very, very tiring. All the time, "teleport can do this", and "teleport can do that", and "scry-buff-teleport screws up games"...I'm not seeing it as being worth it in the long run to teleport...

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

Which allow for many more saves, and require an hour's prep time and only a few minutes of observation at a time. Seems very prone to being noticed and counteracted. Also extremely impractical. Of course, there's the distinct possibility enemy organizations might have counter-intelligence...

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

Adamantine Fail. Fail beyond words. I keep seeing this myth perpretrated again and again and again. Read the spell. Read it again. Read it again. Read Greater Teleport, twice. These spells allow nothing of the sort. Notice the requirements? Knowledge of layout and location of the target...

    Why is there no dwarf-hate?

Don't forget they have darkvision and actually have racial abilities, unlike the poor Half-Orc. If you don't want to muck about with light sources or be an excellent Rogue, go Dwarf. Besides, we have beards, and AXES, and BEARDS.

David Noonan's historical perspective on 3.0 (Update: Part III posted)

I have to say, whoever came up with or whatever method was used to generate the sample 3.0 DMG PCs, needs to be booted from having anything to do with 4e. I want GOOD sample NPCs, not NPCs that look like they were made using random charts! I started with 3rd edition, and even in my earliest...

    Overuse of monsters and magic.

Oh, there's magic and monsters. They're just not mysterious. Except for the new ones that occasionally pop up. The monsters are hidden, and covert, but they aren't mysterious at all. Why it would be unbelievable in a world of magic, I don't know. Because they're, you know, fighting the...

    Overuse of monsters and magic.

This is D&D. D&D is not the real world, nor is it a mysterious world of magic and monsters. In my GURPS modern horror game, I want the players worried about what type of vampire or scanner or demonologist they'll face next and what terrible powers the enemy has alternately been granted as foul...

Harpoon: delusions of grandeur or DM nightmare

I have no idea why you wouldn't be able to pull the harpoon out for more damage if you're trying to lodge it in the enemy and leave it there...or have an ally make a strength check to pull it out once you've hit with it, if you're using the trailing rope. Of course, you wouldn't get any...

    Tasha's Hideous Laughter --- Broken?

IMO, Cloaks of Resistance should really be called IC Cloaks of Magic Resistance because that is what you're wearing them to avoid. And everyone should have one unless you're using something else really nifty--Major Cloak of Displacement, say.

    scry, buff, teleport...initiave?

There's some inherent problems with the idea. Forbiddance is a permanent spell, and Hallow and Unhallow (w. Dimensional Anchor) can be used for less expensive stopgap measures. Taking up residence in an ancient temple with a still functioning forbiddance spell should be a common idea. Also...

What to do with "extra" skill points?

Yep. With 10 Int, you get just enough skill points to do what you NEED to do at max ranks, no more.
