    Designing a 2e Retro-Clone

This is absolutely and completely true. No argument. All I'm focusing on is the "marketing." A Swords & Wizardry type clone gets lots of immediate attention (which is very good because it means ancillary fan projects get started and the snowball starts). Spellcraft & Sorcery, BFRPG, and...

[OD&D] Mythic Asian Fantasy in Two Easy Steps!

You're going to publish this for Swords & Wizardry, right? This is cool stuff. :)

    What Edition Do You Play?

I put down 0e, although the exact game system is Swords & Wizardry, the 0e retro-clone.

    Designing a 2e Retro-Clone

One point, though - the reason for the "truth to the original" approach isn't truth to the original for its own sake. I don't play 2e or even like it particularly, so I've got no dog in this hunt whatsoever. The reason for "truth to the original" approach is because it gains credibility for...

    Designing a 2e Retro-Clone

Because I'm a lawyer, I'm more restricted in the advice I can give than P&P is, but here are my $0.02: 1) You could use Swords & Wizardry or OSRIC for the base: I'd recommend OSRIC because it already has the high-detail approach of 2e and has more of the classes, etc. In either case, if you're...

    Best OD&D system?

Me too, and I wrote the damn thing. Basically, it was either the "race as class" or level limits if I wanted to keep it as a retro-compatible clone. So I deliberately NAMED the classes - such as "Elven Adventurer," so that any GM can simply say, "okay, you're an elf but not one of...

Explain to me what OSRIC is

I think the authors of any of these clones would prefer that people went to the original books rather than the clones themselves. But in many, many cases, there's a bridge, of sorts, needed between the modern way of writing rules and the way they were written pre-2e.

    Best OD&D system?

Black on brown would have been fine. Take another look - it's BROWN on brown.

    1E Resurgence?

I'm not here on enough of a regular basis to gauge what's happening specifically on ENW, but since OSRIC there's been a slowly increasing tide of new blogs, new sites, and more modules appearing in the OOP websites like Dragonsfoot and Knights & Knaves. I don't think it's been linked to 4e - I...

Explain to me what OSRIC is

Here is the OSRIC-type retro-clone for your 0e game: Swords & Wizardry Go to the products page and download the free pdf. There is also an MS Word doc, but it's not formatted - that's for cutting and pasting your own house rules version of 0e. It's all open game content.

    Best OD&D system?

I would go with Swords & Wizardry (0e) if you don't need guidelines and details for playing an old school game, OSRIC (1e) if you like things a bit more detailed. It sort of depends on WHY you want to play an old school game, and whether you've played one before. 0e involves a huge amount...

    Swords & Wizardry (0E retro-clone)

I suppose, but 80 pages just seems ridiculously short for a hardback. One suggestion I've had, which I think is really good, was that when we're done with the Whitebox version (the 3 LBBs only, with no supplemental material, and with much more of the original wonkiness like optional rules...

    Swords & Wizardry (0E retro-clone)

Thanks! And yes, the print version is now available on Lulu at Swords & Wizardry Core Rules (print) The print version is $7.50, and the pdf is free.

    OD&D Clones

Swords & Wizardry differs from 0e in a few major ways. First, the initiative system is more of a least common denominator, since 0e had no initiative system other than the references to using CM. There is only one saving throw, which doesn't change much in terms of modules and resources, and...

    Swords & Wizardry (0E retro-clone)

Depending on where exactly you nail down 0E, which is kind of a moving target with all the supplements and optional rules. But it's a 0E clone. EDIT: sorry, that might seem like an evasive answer. Under the OGL, I can't indicate compatibility with a trademark. I CAN say that it's a...

    Swords & Wizardry (0E retro-clone)

Forgive that this doesn't sound much like a press release, but my whole purpose here is to foster a hobbyist approach rather than a business/consumer approach to games. :) Here is where to download the free pdf: Download Swords & Wizardry Here is the Swords & Wizardry Home page, which accesses...

    OD&D Clones

The print version of Swords & Wizardry is available on Lulu.com. The free pdf should be up in a day or two - it has to have the cover included in the pdf itself, so there's an additional layout step. As Philotomy says, the free .doc version is up, and has been for a while.

    Recommended 1E house rule compliations?

When going back to 1e, the key thing is to simplify it into a system you understand fairly well. The 1e rules are scattered, vague, and sometimes contradictory. OSRIC is (as intended) good for putting them into one place and into logical order. What OSRIC lacks is the dark, naughty, and wry...

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

I, Orcus, Joe Kenzer, and every other IP lawyer out here probably just drew in a sharp breath, suffered from sudden post-traumatic stress memory of being a first-year lawyer, and said a silent prayer for your attorneys. The amount of law-crunching involved on the two sides of that issue, if...
