Castles & Crusades...not sure about it

You mentioned that the system has started to grow on you...it does that. C&C is an odd, weird thing - it's much more playable than it appears to be. Your bad 3E experience is very similar to the experience that pushed me toward C&C, although my peeve isn't the minis (I love minis) but when...

Castles & Crusades with Skeleton Key e-tiles

I converted from 3E to Castles & Crusades, and one of the things I've been discovering is that because combat moves so much more quickly, the adventurers tend to cover more ground during the course of a session. The scenery I have been using is Hirst Arts; plaster walls and such that you mold...

I ran my first Castles & Crusades adventure

Interestingly, I think players only mind the lack of customization at the beginning. It becomes more of a given later on.

C&C house rules -- what are yours?

In my campaign, orcs breed extremely fast also - they are a constant threat, and given the high level of orc mortality at the hands of humans, it's also the only way to justify the hordes of them that a good standard fantasy campaign requires.

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Glad you liked the dialogue. I thought mine ended up more strongly Lyonesse, while Gentlegamer's drew more from the Dying Earth... I must entirely disagree that you can't create a Vancian character with a class system; I have seen it done with the character of Morag the Glum and Silent. The...

    Changing to another edition

We played through all the editions, changing from one to the other largely because the new edition was just there. We barely used the changes that 2E made to 1E. 3E looked good because of the increased specialization and detail. Recently switched to C&C, which is basically like going back to...

Castles & Crusades - has it helped you deepen your campaign world?

Although I started playing (DMing) Castles & Crusades mainly to allow combats to go more quickly, I found out quickly what we all know - that C&C requires far less DM prep time than 3E. The result, in my campaign, has been that I've had a lot more time to flesh out details that matter more to...

Help me with my Castles & Crusades dilemma

I think a fighter would get better at riding a horse and spotting hidden rogues - the default in C&C is that you add your level to the roll. In terms of stealth, this is an area where C&C alters the "feel" toward the archetypes instead of just being rules-lite. It's definitely a system shock...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

I would hope to see it done in the C&C rules, too! I ask no question, and hope that any time spent not answering it will find a home in Castle Zagyg. EDIT: whoa, I missed a whole second page of postings... I was talking about the collaboration module, but the topic has moved on. Sorry about that.

    Sense of wonder?

I'm in the "it's the system" camp. I can't isolate all of it, but one element is the way magic is portrayed as a fairly complete system. Earlier editions (with this reducing in each one) treated magic in the Vancian manner that wizards were using formulae from the small part of magic that they...

I ran my first Castles & Crusades adventure

It's great that you had a good time - I know you were very sceptical about it at first! Too bad that it didn't reawaken your interest in the genre itself - it did for me, but I have always returned to fantasy gaming eventually, so I'm not a good test case. (your command of English is...

C&C house rules -- what are yours?

Akrasia wrote: Do you also, then, have a house rule that allows "holding" your initiative? Or do you have spellcasters declare that they're casting before the initiative roll and assume that casting begins at the top of the round? Otherwise, interrupting casting isn't possible.

[Castles and Crusades] The Encumbrance System has to Go.

I like the ENC system, I just don't like the numbers that are plugged into that system. I'm going to think about the idea of using str as the base number instead of 8+modifier. Most of the enc numbers seem too high to me, so just upping the base number might fix it pretty well.

Castles & Crusades - Assault on Blacktooth Ridge

Compatibility is pretty good, but it's easier to convert from 3E to C&C than the other way around. Zagyg will only have C&C rules, which is partially for legal reasons.

Help me with my Castles & Crusades dilemma

I voted for Greyhawk, but my second choice would be Moorcock. I think it would work easily with C&C - there ARE shiny knights - Dorian Hawkmoon, for example. A Moorcocl world is mainly attitude - law vs chaos with virtually no value on human life in the struggle. Massive force of destiny...

Castles & Crusades - Review of Assault on Blacktooth Ridge (A1)

I think the map is fine for a player map, and it's intended to be used for that. You're not off the hook on writing a review. You have to do it on ENworld because I can't make one go up here.
