Building a wizard's tower on the cheap

So, I'm currently playing a 9th level wizard (specializes in divination, summoning, and blasting magic, barred school of Necromancy) who's fixin' to get a Wizard's Tower, hopefully somewhere in a place where a river flows out of a rocky mountain. I'd like it to be at least a dozen stories, rooms...

Ever play a single race campaign?

The game I'm playing in currently is all-human, but that's an artefact of the setting--while elves, dwarves, etc exist, they are rather rare. --Jeff

Who else considers he has now enough d20 stuff and won't buy more?

I haven't bought anything d20 in 2 years, and most of my RPG purchases these days are indie products. --Jeff

Lessons learned from last Saturday's D&D game.

Hey, winning's cool too. :) And that dragon is going down. We should be able to get about 120 points of damage in before he can act, when we face him next. --Jeff

Lessons learned from last Saturday's D&D game.

Part Deux We played again this week. Lessons learned this time: • Selling a cursed ring that makes you want to eat people to a necromancer? Sure, they'd pay more for it! • If a character is dropped to -9 HP from full in one round, it's time to evacuate them. • "Evacuating" should not involve...

Lessons learned from last Saturday's D&D game.

But, then, even Fast Movement withers before the glory of magic that breaks the Intermediate Value Theorum. As for pain rules, we once declared characters Disabled (can only take a partial action each round, and -1 HP if you do so) when they reach 10% of their Hit Points (instead of just 0). It...

    Are knowledge skills worth it?

In the game I play in, the GM allows one situation to be covered by multiple different Knowledge skills, and asks for Knowledge checks frequently. When a check is called for, he'll often ask the player if they have any skill that they think applies to the topic at hand. --Jeff

Lessons learned from last Saturday's D&D game.

    1) When you have a character with 44 HP that takes 40 damage from one spell--half of which is Vile damage--RUN AWAY! 2) When acting in accordance with #1, do not leave your allies behind by using your last Teleport for the day to get to another continent. 3) If you mistakenly carry out #2, at...

NC Game Day VII - April 23!

This time I can definitely make it. Yay! ...assuming, that is, that school doesn't interfere. (grumble, bloody education, grumble) But yeah, this time I can almost definitely make it. Anyone up for a Dogma-style Angels Versus Demons game using the new WoD/Storytelling system?

How long have you been with your gaming group?

My "core" group, or at least I and the two other guys that make up its axis, have been gaming together for about five years. However, I've just recently (within the past six months or so) joined in on two other groups, GMing for one and playing in the other. I voted 5 years, as that's the most...

Expanding Skills- Knowledge and Contacts Subskills

I'm loving this idea, and I'll be pointing my GM in the direction of this thread. (Also helps that we're both Feng Shui players.) I think it might be a good idea to have the Knowledge subskill have the normal key ability replaced by Int, and the Contacts subskill have the key ability replaced...

    Feat Ideas for Spellcasters

Opinions?.. Torrent of Magic DESCRIPTION: You throw open the floodgates of your power, releasing a great amount of spell energy. REQUIREMENTS: Improved Initiative, Quicken Spell BENEFIT: You may cast multiple quickened spells in a round. However, this has two restrictions. Firstly, all spells...

The Mésalliance. Part 2. (Updated 11/28)

Great updates! Nwm's Ur-Tree Greater Green thingy is way cool. Could it become a substitute of sorts for Mostin's Web of Motes, in terms of raw info yield? --Jeff

North Carolina Game Day VI: January 29

Sproinkle!* *Translation: Cool, the Enworlders From NC That Arent' Yet Old Enough To Drink were wondering when the next Gameday would be. I'll tell the others. Anyway, I don't really have any thoughts on what to run, unless Henry's gang would like to cash in on the Feng Shui game that I owe them.

    In-game concept of spell levels?

Given that spell level and caster level are easily measurable to any scientific minded character, we've given them concrete in-game pralelles, dubbing the former House of Power and the latter Circle of Power. So, for instance, a Fighter 3/Wizard 5 with the Practiced Spellcaster feat would have...

    Combat Martial Arts in D&D

The only problem that I can see is that, as you have it written, Improved/Advanced CMA are complete, total, absolute, badass must-buys for any monk. In order to balance this, I'd simply say that the Monk's unarmed strike ability does not count as Combat Martial Arts, thus making not taking this...

    what spells do you use

In the campaign in which I currently play, divine spells are almost all PHB. On the other hand, only about two out of every three arcane spells cast are core standard: the rest are homebrewed. You're about as likely to see Teppin's Most Dramatic Disappearance as you are Teleport, Zambargo's...

How much game mechanics do PCs get to see?

I haven't been GMing much, but the guy who runs the game I play in doesn't tell us much right out. It's easy to infer, though--after a couple of swings at an opponent you'll probably know their AC within a point or two. Likewise for enemy spellcasters: after you've saved against or taken damage...
