Forced to end movement in illegal space.

I like the sqeezing idea; forcing the falling PC to be prone in the shared space works for me, too. I think there are a handful of good options here. DM Judgement call. The MOST IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind here is that WHATEVER decision you make is the RIGHT decision -- make it and keep...

Ways to assess an encounter early

My Co-DM and I have done away with monster knowledge checks for our game -- as a house rule experiment. We had reached a point where it was just part of the standard procedure at the start of an encounter, and was used to determine what the monster's weaknesses might be, etc. What I do -- as...

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Intro (part 1 of 4)

Good luck with that. I had just gotten a new job, and had been given a signing bonus (made me feel like an athlete, which pretty much never happens for this fat lazy slob). So, I essentially had an amount of "found money" and I was able to sell her on the idea that I should be able to spend...

Is this an effective "LFG" want ad?

I think it still needs to be trimmed down a lot. Here's a slimmer version: Let's Play Pathfinder! Every Tuesday Evening, 6:30 PM - 10:30 PM The setting is generic. Players may take creative license over a portion of the world. This will be discussed and introduced to the world by the players...

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Encounter Maps (part 2 of 4)

I've been playing long enough to remember playing before we used minis at all. I remember the advent of minis and when our group first started using a battlemat. I remember the first poster maps. I giggled with excitement when I saw map tiles at GenCon for the first time. Now I have a storage...

I spend way too much on RPG's.

I spend plenty on gaming (hell, I just started a column about gadgets and technology in gaming, and the seed for that is actually having spent a lot of money on them). But I don't see my hobby spending as a problem. 1. I can afford it. (double income no kids household, and so on) 2. Compared...

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Intro (part 1 of 4)

I'm sure at some point in the near future I'll write a column about the whole TV experience -- including my considerations around protecting the screen and my not-satisfactorily-productive-yet conversations with a local cabinetmaker to design a game table to hold the TV.

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Intro (part 1 of 4)

We played for one session with not protection on the screen. Then, I decided to add a little protection and added a layer of mylar film (linked to the product page where I bought it). It provides a little protection against things like pens and fingerprints and so on -- and you can draw on it...

    X-Com: RPG

There's at least one Savage Worlds fan created setting for X-com -- probably for the old game, but still, it could get you started...

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Intro (part 1 of 4)

It is, and I'm not even the first one to try it. There was a good thread about the evolution of our gaming spaces a little while back -- here's a link: http://www.enworld.org/forum/tabletop-gaming/326393-evolution-your-gaming-space.html Jupp inspired me to take the leap and take the plunge on...

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Intro (part 1 of 4)

A new column on Technology and Gadgets in Tabletop Roleplaying. Think of it as Lifehacker for RPGs. The proliferation of gadgets, game aids, software, and so on, is all great fun and can add a lot to your game. But it comes at a cost: an escalation of tech gadgetry puts DMs in a position...

Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

I'm fine with it. I got quite used to using the "All threads" menu option when it was available, and this seems to be an improvement on that idea. It's worth trying -- after all, it's the web, if it doesn't work, it can always be changed back. -rg

    Savage Worlds is flippin' awesome.

Probably one of the biggest differences is the idea that in a lot of cases the game will feel sort of "swingy" -- a lot of attacking and rolling damage but only occasionally having anything to show for it. Especially with high toughness targets. I've been doing some "practice" sea battles for...

    More WotC reprints.

+1 for Slavers. Waiting until June is a drag, though.

    Co-DMing

A friend and I are Co-DMing a 4e game, and have done so for years. At one point, we actually had three DMs trading off, but one decided to drop back to just playing. We've been mostly successful, and will probably continue. We usually run Adventure Paths, so the over arching story arc takes...

    Savage Worlds is flippin' awesome.

I've recently started a game (Pirates of the Spanish Main infused with Horror) and I'm having much the same experience. Actually, I sort of can't wait for our group's SECOND savage worlds campaign -- one that is less about trying out rules and more about the story. -rg

What is the best way to handle a chase scene?

I'm just backing up QL here -- he's got a lot of great ideas, and the bottom line is that anything --really anything -- can work, depending upon what you want to do. I'd be inclined to play around with the format a bit -- if the PCs are on three wagons, then what you're running is really...
