    Neil Gaiman: Badly Overated?

Hi all; The thread title overstates things a little. I keep on hearing great things about Neil Gaiman, as author of prose fiction. He's certainly a very important figure within the fantasy genre. I've bought and read Smoke and Mirrors, his short story collection, and to be honest it seems...

The Case of the Martian Ambassador

Wow. What is it about open calls? I'd never seen any of them, ever, until a few months ago. And now they seem to coming along pretty regularly. Is this just me? At least it's a sign that Wizards commissioning department thinks they work. I think this is a really good idea by Wizards books...

[EnWorld Book Club] The Club Dumas: Discussion.

I'll post my thoughts in more detail later. I was very impressed by how cleverly the book was constructed, particularly in self-conciously using the devices of serial fiction and the detective novel, the two plot strands, and the way the engravings and diagrams were integrated into the text. I...

[EnWorld Book Club] The Club Dumas: Discussion.

Discussion of the ENWorld Book Club's October selection, The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte, starts here. Thanks to everyone who's gone to the trouble of reading it. The Randomhouse website gives a list of questions intended to kickstart discussion of the novel, these are copied below...

Status of White Wolf lawsuit against Underworld?

Is there an online source for this? I'm not questioning anyone's word; it's just I'd be interested in reading the anouncement (and any discussion it's generated).

Status of White Wolf lawsuit against Underworld?

I have heard nothing. Because of this, I presume the wheels of justice are still slowly in motion. I'm fairly sure if it had been resolved we would have seen a statement to that effect, what with the online activity of various WW employees. The best source for information for this is probably...

    Do you read short stories?

Do you read short stories? They've been in decline for some time as novels sell much better. This is particular the case in fantasy when they used to be standard format, which post-Tolkien switched to the multivolume series. If you do read short stories, which genres?

Calling all Teachers: A question about my education

I'm speaking from a UK perspective (so apply your judgement as to how applicable what I say will be to you). But I've had teachers with PhDs, and had friends with PhDs who've gone on to become teachers. I don't think overqualification was ever a problem - and one of my friends decided he wanted...

[The Club Dumas] Can you crack this Latin code?

Thanks. The translations given are those made by one character in the novel. So there is wriggle room for an imperfect translation. I'm glad the latin is valid, even if it's a little ambiguous (which, in context, may be a plus rather than a minus). I don't want to say too much now, before the...

Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar: Whats your favorite story?

These are all really good stories. There are some really good stories not listed, I think Jewels in the Forest is the equal of some of those above. The best three stories - in my opinion - are The Bleak Shore, The Sunken City, and The Howling Tower. In no particular order. The others are good...

    EN World Book Club

Mark; I think On Writing will be an excellent choice and will lead to some very interesting discussion. I've no problems with your timetabling suggestions (though don't just go on my word). It gives the club a book a month, with a month of reading with nothing else on the reading list, and a...

[The Club Dumas] Can you crack this Latin code?

Tarchon, thanks for all your assistance. You've been fantastic, I'm very grateful. I think my transcription is accurate. I went over it as carefully as I could. There may be one or two minor slip ups, but nothing to cause the level of corruption you say is there. I've checked and all your...

    Grail Quests

I've read Malory and other ancient arthurian stuff. I've also read the Da Vinci Code recently, which wasn't very good. Are there any good, modern grail quest stories that are worth reading?

[The Club Dumas] Can you crack this Latin code?

Thanks very much for the help. Yes, this is the book they made the Ninth Gate from. Though everyone who's read it says the Club Dumas is better than the film. You're all welcome to read it and join in the discussion on the 15th. I think it's probably deliberately mangled. The author uses...

[The Club Dumas] Can you crack this Latin code?

For what it's worth the book says that it's a "style of abbreviation similar to that found in ancient latin manuscripts". And it is difficult to read, you'd have to know latin well enought to guess words. A bit like a crossword. As for this line: I can figure out who the first three names...

Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar: Whats your favorite story?

Not much I'm afraid. The Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stuff gets worse the more recently it was writen. This is tragic really. I didn't like Knight and Knave at all. The best stuff (which is as good as sword and sorcery gets) is the earliest stuff both in terms of the writing date and the chronology.

[EnWorld Book Club] Next Selection: The Club Dumas.

Bump, mostly. But thanks to everyone who is reading, has read, is re-reading the book. I got a lot from the book on a re-read; parts of the story actually felt very different the second time around. I have also started a thread over in Off Topic Discussion, trying to find out what the...
