are we talking any edition? if so to me the fighting man is a template just like all the rest of the classes to play what you want to play. you, the referee, and the group (in a slight way) help to decide how your fun is incorporated into the campaign.

truth. Bushido had something similar in 1982. i wasn't sure from the original thread question how far back he wanted to go into the origin of what is happening now. we use the all the time in Old School Hack (an ENnies winner)

if that is what the player wants to play and it doesn't disrupt the others enjoyment. i would work with the player for ways to make it work with the campaign as the referee.

if you want to go further back. the 1edADnD Conan modules had action points for the PCs and the BBEG.

how far back do you want to go? Dragonlance had them for 1edADnD circa 1985. they weren't called "plot points". but they pretty much did the same thing. when you are trying to keep the characters on the same storyline as the novels and release of future modules/adventures they help. edit...

there was a pamphlet version too back pre-3.5 by a third party company. wish i could remember the name of it and company. but it was around 2001 or so release. edit: i packed up my stuff for that version.
