    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

I should probably kick out the players that don't even know the rules by now after playing for nearly a year, but it is frustrating finding reliable back-fills, especially with being half way through a 2 year campaign series.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

A lot of it comes from sandbox world, players deciding what to do next. I no longer allow strategy talk during combat, you are allowed up to 6 seconds, and like I said reaction if required if it isn't your turn. That doesn't prevent the pre-fight strategy where the players discuss 3-5 bad...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

3 Fighter Champion, 8 Barbarian Berserker. Great Axe, 1d12, 3 Attacks, 2 from multi, bonus is Frenzy, Reckless attack gives advantage. +5 from STR, +10 from Great Weapon Master. Fighter gives Great Weapon Fighting (reroll on 1 or 2), Action Surge, 19/20 Critical.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

1/2 RP a session, 1/2 encounter. I don't go, okay guys, 1, 2, 3 roll! 1,2,3 roll! Players try to assess the situation they are about to enter, and come up with a plan, it isn't all move in, attack rinse repeat. This is even with my house rule of requiring a reaction to talk when it isn't your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

Not sure how you are theorycrafting that. You might have higher damage if you dual wield rapiers as a Rogue, but you can't do it all. If you want to dual wield, you aren't hiding, then you aren't getting advantage, etc. It adds up. a 1d8+5 and 1d8+5 plus 6d6(even with one with advantage) !=...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

That's fine if that was their intent, but when a hard encounter = 4 hours, and we are supposed to get 8 in, Two months for 1 day of play????

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

I am DMing 2 weekly parties right now, (co-dm one), of levels 11 and 9. I've also run an adventurers league game(low level). The level 11 party Sorcercer is throwing out fireball after fireball of insane damage. The Rogue, when getting a sneak attack is hitting for high 20s, and can crit for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

I'm currently in this line of thinking as well. During Playtest they were saying they wanted cantrips to do 2/3rds of the damage of damage dealers. Right now, I feel it is much higher than 66%. Sure there are the outliers like sharpshooter and great weapon master users which can have nice...

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Interview with the Escapist

I just had two players of mine "troll" me asking about the target rules for self spells and cone spells. I feel they were trying to use a play on words and weren't understanding the difference between the application of the words "targets" and "target". One player actually asked me since any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bless and Bane spell

I'm going to use passive arcana checks for stuff like this. Essentially, if a passive check covers it, and it isn't actively taking an action to do it, then you can know it. If you have to focus on thinking about something(active, then you have to roll). For instance, if a creature has a base...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-Proficient Saves

Sounds like you don't want to have any weaknesses... Worry not, you can just use all of your ability score improvements as resilient feats!!! - problem solved!!!

D&D 5E (2014) Why play a low-level Fighter when the Barbarian is so much better?

It does limit on heavy armor : While raging, you gain the following benefits if you aren’t w earing heavy armor: • You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws. • When you make a melee weapon attack using Strength, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you...

D&D 5E (2014) Why play a low-level Fighter when the Barbarian is so much better?

Keep in mind, a lot of that early Barbarian stuff, such as Rage, Fast movement, does restrict on heavy armor. That said, having Action Surge as a fighter is really strong early levels - recharges on short rest. Both have their pluses and minuses. Rage on Long rests... Grabbing 1 Barbarian as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing Borked?

Completely disagree, it makes it a MUCH much harder decision. You have to truly evaluate when your character will be able to do what, and at what levels. Diping 1 level for a level 1 class feature can easily give you what you want, for instance a fighter grabbing 1 level of barbarian for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing Borked?

This is intentional to make dipping flat out slow you down, making it so multiclassing is balanced. There is plenty of upside to Multi-classing. However without the class level requirement for the ability score improvements/feats, there would be definitive cut and dry levels to multiclass to...

MCing Barbarian and Paladin, can you Divine Smite while raging? It says you can't cast spells or maintain concentration, but divine smite doesn't say it is a spell, just that it uses a spell slot. I imagine Lay on Hands can be used as well?

    D&D 5E (2014) Half Elf vs Human

Human's +1 language as well. A feat is the equivalent to +2 to a stat, and some might argue more so. Unless you are MCing into a class that needs CHA, I think it makes more sense to go Human to take the free feat. It helps drastically with theme characters, for instance I am making a Human...

D&D 5E (2014) Rarity of Healing for the Common Man in the 5e Implied Setting

Oddly enough I started with D&D Next. I noticed that fairly early on as I could not very easily threaten the group that had a Mt Dwarf Life Cleric (they had +1 AC then), so with two basic magic items (armor and a shield), he was sitting at 23AC. He could heal anyone back to full, and had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger

I disagree with the hating of Rangers, them along with Rogues and Bards I believe are the only many multiple skill classes, and the Ranger gets these options from outside of their background. Making it split into 3 makes it much easier to control and give the advantage to Rangers as they have...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Help Me Break the Game!

You are missing: 1. Not sure what kind of DM is going to start a low level character off with Plate Armor until level 3/4? (gold requirement alone??) 2. You need the STR for heavy armor. So no, STR isn't a dump stat. You'll always be behind in max spell level and often number of spell slots.
