Which Essentials class do you like the most?

My favorite has got to be Knight. It's straightforward and feels just right (for me). I'm a bit bummed that the class leans you towards hammer/mace or sword only (I was hoping the shield would be a third "branch") I really like the Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, and Warpriest, too!

The DM Burnout and How to Get Past That: Advice?

Hi all, A little background: as far as I've remembered, in all my gaming groups since high school I tend to be the default DM. I'm passionate about the game, but I wouldn't call myself someone who loves to DM. I sometimes equate the position as being the stage manager of a production, the...

Arg, Too Many Monster Stat Blocks

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the helpful tips. There has to be a an easier way to not have to visually plough through blocks of olive and dark olive textboxes. :/ Maybe I'll scour the web later. I recently found this page explaining how to use a numberless monster health tracking system. It's...

Arg, Too Many Monster Stat Blocks

Hi all, While I'm still passionate about DMing, I've been getting lazier and lazier in copying down monster stat blocks into my DM notes. Sometimes, I keep flipping back and forth between the pages in the Monster Manual bookmarked by index cards. Am I the only one here? I just can't be arsed...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

Interesting discussion. I've read through most of the post over the course a few days and I've come away feeling torn (still). As a DM I'm protagonist-centric, and I tend to dislike seeing my players' heroes fumble and mess-up so badly on a simple-ish task. I fudge rolls to assist my players or...

Saving Throw vs Death Saving Throw

Yes, my player was more looking at this specific power. Thank you everyone for contributing your input, really helps!

Saving Throw vs Death Saving Throw

Thanks guys! Actually unless we are wrong a death saving throw on an off-turn can be great because a result (not roll) of 20 means the guy can spend a healing surge. Our cleric player is trying to figure out if he could potentially help the fallen fighter player bounce back to positive HP using...

Saving Throw vs Death Saving Throw

Hi all, I'm in need of a rules expert. Is a death saving throw techinically a saving throw in terms of triggering from effects/abilities that go off saving throws? Or are they two very separate things? According to the rules compendium it says that DSTs "work like" STs. That's a tad vague still...

Giving players narrative control: good bad or indifferent?

I don't mean any disrespect to the above interesting views but there is no one right way to GM or play D&D. If people are having fun so be it. I think this debate just illustrates how important it is for the players and the GM to share the same style and appreciation of it.

    Your approach to session planning?

I'm curious to know how others approach it as well. I personally try to run them organically and take notes as new things come up. I do have a loose idea of the main framework of the story but I try to let the players cue me. As such, I GM very badly when I have power gamer or munchkin players...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Herremann the Wise :) I agree somewhat but I'm more inclined to understand D&D as a game on top of it being about group storytelling. We do take on the roleplaying, you misunderstand. We do not play D&D like it's Monopoly. I grill my players on their characters and can often properly RP them...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

D&D is ultimately a game and not Acting or Dramaturgy 101, so even if healing surges are "video-gamey" I think it's fine. I currently play 4E and while I feel that the system often flatlines RP (because it's too easy to sit back and let the system take over the story or battle), it is also as to...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Hi all. I'm not very articulate but if I may offer my perspective on the Healing Surge and Hit Points discussion: As a 4E DM, I don't see Hit Points as Health Points entirely. I know this isn't much better but I think of HP as 'destiny' or 'narrative' points. If an ogre 'hits' a PC, the...
