EDIT: This post was absolutely 100% a bad idea. I'm out.

Is killing a Goblin who begs for mercy evil?

Mostly my point is that superhero genre conventions about the morality of continuum of force don't really have much basis in real-life ethical considerations and definitely should not apply to sword & sorcery fantasy adventures.

Just deleted the long-winded and mostly hyperbolic version of this post. edit: Should have deleted this version, too.

    Black Widow

I'm calling it in the top half of the MCU-- which is not faint praise!-- but not top shelf. What was good was very, very good but the parts that didn't land dragged the whole thing down a bit.

Is killing a Goblin who begs for mercy evil?

Rule .303. Batman has the capacity to find, thwart, and apprehend Joker on multiple occasions and he knows, canonically, what is going to happen each and every single time he apprehends the Joker. That means that he bears some degree of the moral responsibility for the inevitable consequences of...

Is killing a Goblin who begs for mercy evil?

It really shouldn't matter what kind of person they are... but it matters a whole lot what they were doing before they started begging for mercy. It matters a lot, what you think they're going to do after you lower your weapon and whether or not you have the power to stop that. The Comics Code...

D&D 5E (2014) Would handing your party 1,000 gp at character creation break your game?

If your Rogue is quick with a knife, he could discover that the Invisible Hand is made of delicious invisible meat.

D&D 5E (2014) Would handing your party 1,000 gp at character creation break your game?

The biggest thing that makes the D&D economy not work is the players who don't understand how non-D&D economies work. A spyglass is only worth 1,000 gp to someone who has (a lot) more than 1,000 gp to spend and 1,000 gp worth of use for a spyglass. A shopkeeper will only pay 500 gp for a 1,000...

But how can you eat anchovies on a pizza without pineapple? They are the perfect complements as pizza toppings. Pineapple, anchovy, and roasted red pepper is as perfect and wholesome as pineapple, spinach, and feta.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do people care when threads get necro'd?

I mean... it makes me a little uncomfortable to be reminded that I've been on this website for over half of my life, and see new posters commenting on threads that I last commented upon before they were born.

Dan Davenport runs Q&A interviews on his Discord server, to let creative types promote their crowdfunding campaigns or upcoming products or whatever. They're an incredibly valuable opportunity for a creator who has their ducks in a row, but some of the questions asked by the host, the regulars...

This was the product I promised I was going to "buy on sight" if anyone ever managed to bring it to market. Recent comments... have caused me to both downgrade GiantLands to "wait for reviews" and suspect that it's even less likely to be published than I realized. Dismissing the community most...

Is killing a Goblin who begs for mercy evil?

It is always a good thing to accept a surrender you believe is being offered in good faith. Knightly orders of chivalry or hospitality might not even allow their members to decline, or to judge for themselves whether or not a plea of surrender is in good or bad faith until it is clearly broken...

D&D General Does the killer DM exist?

I've run into just about every other kind of abusive DM I've ever heard of, but I don't have any personal experience with the "killer" type. I've killed a few player characters in the past thirty years, but less than my fair share for someone who cut his teeth on AD&D. I pride myself on my...

D&D 5E (2014) [Hit Points] What method do you use to determine HP after level 1?

I just had to replace my entire dice bag because they started doing that. One d6, in particular, rolled 4.167 every single time.

    D&D 5E (2014) No Equivalent of Detect/Discern Lies in 5E?

It also addresses the unrelated problem that D&D worlds feel like modern, scientific/deterministic worlds that just have a layer of magic sort of slathered on top. Remove the spellcasting requirement on crafting alchemical items, and let "mundane" items have magical properties without constantly...

    D&D 5E (2014) No Equivalent of Detect/Discern Lies in 5E?

Yeah, for sure. One thing I really like about Pathfinder is the stealth nerf to spells like knock and remove disease that suddenly make "mundane skills" very important. And Skill Unlocks from Pathfinder Unchained. Way, way too much of the interaction/exploration pillars of modern D&D is...

D&D General What are your Core races?

D&D with collaborative, improv-style worldbuilding, taking turns whitelisting and blacklisting the debris of forty years of D&D lore is amazing. My Shroompunk game and likely the generic OGC version of the rules will likely include a semi-random and a collaborative model for worldbuilding...

D&D 5E (2014) [Hit Points] What method do you use to determine HP after level 1?

Pre-5e I was really fond of max at 1st, reroll all your HD every level after that-- take the higher of the reroll or current total + 1/2/3 (by class), HD capped at name level. Nowadays, I'd probably want to tie CON and HD and max HP together differently.
