    D&D 5E (2014) Monstrous Compendium Eldraine Creatures

I would love for a big monster book to come out with all the Monstrous Compendiums we've had so far plus other hitherto online-only monsters

Sneak Peak of Planescape: A Preview

The 90s were a time of hope; of relative social, economic, and political stability. The fantasy of the time was grim and gritty. Now, the real world is grim and gritty. In a game where we can simulate anything, we young'ns don't want to simulate hopelessness, extreme inequality, crumbling...

    D&D 5E (2014) Brainstorming Wizard Subclasses

I mentioned this in an earlier post about "more flavorful wizard subclasses," but I think it would be really cool to focus on fields of study outside the schools of magic, maybe using the INT skills as a starting point. A Magizoologist, with extra proficiencies and abilities regarding magical...

D&D 5E (2024) Are You Happy with the Selection of Subclasses?

I'm overall happy. There's a few glaring omissions theme-wise, but they seem backwards compatible enough for the time being. I'll be looking forward to a reworked Inquisitive Rogue (please just call it Detective) with all the cool new Rogue stuff. I think we'll get a splatbook "Tasha Presents"...

D&D 5E (2024) Are You Happy with the Selection of Subclasses?

Honestly we are due for an Undead themed book. Abi Dalzim Presents: Scourge of the Undead. Or something

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D24 Spellcaster Subclasses: Thematic Unity

One of my players is playing a Satyr Fey Wanderer in a Witchlight game. Maximun fey. A ton of fun.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D24 Spellcaster Subclasses: Thematic Unity

I noticed that the subclasses choices for Spellcasters in the 2024 PHB follow certain patterns and themes, and that may explain some of the odd choices. Druid is obvious: Land, Sea, Moon, and Stars. Clockwork Soul sorcery is the counterpoint to Wild Magic sorcery--chaos and order (probably why...

    D&D 5E (2024) Limiting Short Rests to 2x/day

Here's my house rule: Any activity that is not combat, dungeon-crawling, concentrating on a spell, strenuous physical activity, or trekking through a harsh climate or difficult terrain can count as a short rest. (So no need to stop and sit down. Carousing or just walking or riding to a place...

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

Just because a place is diverse doesn't mean it's a utopia. The cantina is decidedly not. (Although I absolutely believe you can have a compelling and satisfying adventure in a place "where every individual is celebrated"). Also, I'm just talking about what I want. I don't want to take away any...

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

Yes! I do not want any more settings where the people different from me exist only at the fringes of civilization, acting within narrow, defined roles. Elves and Dwarves are in so many different stories now, the game should recognize they've grown beyond their Tolkeinian roots. In a game where...

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

    1. Yes, I am American. And we have had some f***ed up history of calling people "half" something in a denigrating way. That's the "context" WotC is working in. But even outside that context, I have always disliked calling a character or NPC a "half-elf" with the assumption that the other half...

D&D 5E (2024) Half Race Appreciation Society: Half Elf most popular race choice in BG3

I think it is important to parse what is actually happening. 1. WotC is moving away from the name "half-elf," because the naming convention, not human-elf hybrids themselves, is based on a problematic history of calling mixed people "half" something. (I myself am mixed, half-Arab. If, upon...

D&D 5E (2024) Memorize Spell is one of the most obnoxious abilities I've ever seen, despite being perfectly on-theme (Packet 7)

Yeah, I get that. Different experiences. I try to give my players a few encounters in a row sometimes to really tax those resources. It probably really makes a difference depending on the level as well. I'm curious, what's an example of a spell you believe steps on the toes of skill-based...

    D&D 5E (2024) Is Magical Cunning enough? (Warlock P7)

My own homebrew solution to short rests is that I have expanded the definition of short rests. Basically, any hour in which no combat occurs counts as a short rest as long as the party is not on some kind of death march, or jungle/arctic trek.

D&D 5E (2024) Memorize Spell is one of the most obnoxious abilities I've ever seen, despite being perfectly on-theme (Packet 7)

That's a good point, but I believe my logic holds true for other spells. The downside is that the Wizard has to blow a spell slot. No other downside necessary. (even though most enchantment spells have the downside of ticking people off when they fail or even when they succeed). I would blow a...

D&D 5E (2024) Memorize Spell is one of the most obnoxious abilities I've ever seen, despite being perfectly on-theme (Packet 7)

That's fair. 5e design assumes an adventuring day that most tables do not use. I agree that needs to be fixed. For my fix, I would rather get rid of spell prep altogether and reduce their spell slots. I think if you know a spell, you should be able to cast it when you need to. But it should be...

D&D 5E (2024) Memorize Spell is one of the most obnoxious abilities I've ever seen, despite being perfectly on-theme (Packet 7)

I think that the primary limitation on Wizards are their spell slots. (Not that it is a very harsh limitation). It's true that Knock is an auto-succeed lockpick; but they have to use a spell slot. Rogues have to roll to pick the lock, but they can attempt to pick how ever many locks a day they...
