    D&D 5E (2014) The Revised Ranger, Revised...

I like how the Unearthed Arcana Horizon Walker handled an ability similar to Primeval Awareness. Horizon Walker Rangers get an ability to sense magic portals in a wide area around them. The first usage per day is free, but subsequent uses burn spell slots. I could see Primeval Awareness, being...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dying House Rule

Here's one way to handle the whack-a-mole aspect of 0 HP... Allow magical healing to automatically stabilize a downed PC, but don't actually allow him or her to regain consciousness unless he or she was recovered to at least one half (or one quarter) of max HP.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

Wouldn't this encourage background shopping, though? There are a lot of backgrounds out there (in the PHB or otherwise), and most PCs under your system would be able to select a background that gets them the two non-class skills that they want. Players would be incentivized to eschew a more...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

The base rules for Backgrounds already allow you to freely swap out skill and tool proficiencies, languages, and features when you select your background. Your alternative here seems to weaken/narrow that. Why?

D&D 5E (2014) What If the players lost every adventure path so far in the realms?

On the other hand, Mordenkainen definitely would not.

    D&D 5E (2014) Two-Weapon Fighting alteration

Yeah, but that'd be a good candidate ability for a revised fighting style and/or feat.

    D&D 5E (2014) Two-Weapon Fighting alteration

Yeah, it pretty much works as you describe. The fighting style simply wouldn't be compatible anymore with this change, so it'd need to be changed as well. You could always just make it identical the great weapon fighting style in the interim.

D&D 5E (2014) An alternative take on the Hexblade as a Fighter Archetype

Thanks for the response, I never received a notification for it. I can see the class as being underpowered. I modeled the abilities after similar ones from the Battlemaster and Champion, and erred on the side of caution when it came to power level. As for what would happen if the PC found...

I'm interested to see your homebrew take on the melee cantrips.

    D&D 5E (2014) Witch Bolt (but good)

I'm not sure that's balanced. Try this version instead. A beam of crackling, red energy lances out toward a creature within range, forming a sustained arc of lightning between you and the target. At the start of the creatures turn it takes 1d12 damage. You must spend an action to sustain...

OK, you listed out the ways in which this spell is worse than Spiritual Weapon. Now list out the ways in which it is better.

Have you compared this spell side-by-side with Spiritual Weapon?

Hardcore Basic D&D - Input Needed

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but have you looked at the new adventure, Storm King's Thunder? It has a lot of the elements you're talking about here, including the necessity of outside sources of power to confront earth-shaking challenges.

Hardcore Basic D&D - Input Needed

One way to compress the progression to ten levels is to start every character off at level three, then increase them two levels every time they level up. Odd levels are generally when characters unlock their fanciest features, so this should give your players a cool new toy to play with every...

Simple. Imbue Weapon Evocation cantrip Casting Time: 1 bonus action Range: Self Components: V, S, M (a weapon) Duration: 1 round You imbue a weapon you are holding with a brief flicker of elemental power. When you cast this spell, select a damage type: fire, ice, lightning, or acid. The next...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Green Flame Blade is Over Rated- And You Are Doing it Wrong.

I'm not sure you read my post carefully as your response doesn't appear to be tailored to points I made. The first paragraph was a hypothetical to illustrate a basic game design concept to another poster. The second was a concrete example of a failure in that design which described two weapons...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Green Flame Blade is Over Rated- And You Are Doing it Wrong.

Shocking Grasp and, arguably, Poison Spray are cantrip melee options. Granted, I agree that there is design space for cantrips that enhance melee weapon attacks, I just think the Sword Coast cantrips do a poor job of it. I would prefer those cantrips use a bonus action so that the caster can...

    D&D 5E (2014) Two-Weapon Fighting alteration

An extra 1d6 damage at 5th level certainly isn't going to break the game. On the other hand, remember that this would stack with other benefits like a fighter's Weapon Training and would give more opportunities for Smites and Sneak Attacks to land. It is also even more die rolls during combat...
