    Critique my House Rules

I hadn't, really. It's worth thinking about. I intended to keep the scaling to a minimum on it, with all the other options characters acquire as they gain levels, but I want to prevent it from being too front-loaded also. I guess it makes sense for me to provide a bit more detail on the...

    Critique my House Rules

Please do not waste your energy trying to convince me that any of my concepts are bad, because everyone has their own. I'm simply concerned with corrective balance. Races In addition to normal racial bonuses, all small races receive -4 Str and Con, +2 Dex (I know this is a hard sell, but I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Perception vs Investigate

I get the feeling it's supposed to be a little nebulous, in large part because "figuring things out" realistically would involve both Intelligence and Wisdom in a lot of situations. Even though it doesn't exactly seem to be what they were going for, I generally think of perception as more...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

I'll be honest - I don't really see why you feel the need to try to argue me out of my (commonly held) perspective that Int is weaker than it should be in 5e. You aren't going to succeed. https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/3gxyk3/int_dump_stat_hope_you_enjoy_being_stupid/

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

Yeah, and I don't think there's any need to replicate this. It's relatively easy to boost attributes without adding really fiddly mechanics. I use Sanity/Madness in a lot of my games, which helps boost Wisdom and Charisma already. Charisma also impacts Inspiration.

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

I'm pretty sure armor is calculated into encumbrance. It just also has minimum strength requirements in the basic rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

I'm not sure why you would have any. For a College of Lore bard, Str is more or less a "dump" stat and therefore comparable to Intelligence. That doesn't mean there aren't several issues: 1. There are way, way more builds for which Str is not a dump stat, including many builds that it's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

Some of you seem to be forgetting that the reason the standard encumbrance rule is so generous is because armor has strength requirements. So, in addition to encumbrance, the fact that Athletics tends to be more useful than all of the Int skills combined, that strength is used for all basic...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Attributes

    1. It's possible that a lot of the issue with Dex/Agility is a simple misnaming of the attribute. It really should be called Agility, since Agility is conceptually broader. Dexterity specifically carries a connotation of fine motor skills, which many creatures that are highly agile do not...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Attributes

This is something that's come up around here before, but I don't see any recent discussions on the topic. I know the 6 scores we have now are iconic, and very unlikely to officially ever change, but if you were to perform some sort of iteration - what would you do? My biggest issues are: 1.)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

I actually came up with a variant mechanics for Inspiration and Hero Points (which I feel need to be polished anyway) that use charisma and intelligence respectively a while back, which I may still playtest. The base mechanic is swapped between them for better thematic consistency (TP grants...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

While Cha is a bit on the weak side, it fares a bit better than int due to both the general usefulness of the skills and the number of classes whose abilities benefit from it. Additionally, Int is more believable as an attribute that would actually contribute significantly to success across all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

It's kind of a core problem with the attribute that it has a very soft role in the game outside of Wizards, meaning that getting the full use out of it is dependent on the DM running the game in a certain way. I don't think it's ideal, honestly, and the argument you're making here could be made...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

The thing is, though, despite what a lot of people seem to think, I feel that Int should actually a play small-moderate direct role in combat, and not just in RP or skill encounters. Years ago I came up with a Tactics mechanic that involved rerolls and utilized Int, but it's a bit heavy for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

In a lot of ways that makes more sense, but it has the problem of requiring actual calculations and bookkeeping.

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

I disagree. In essence, Intelligence is about knowledge, tactics, and quick thinking, which means that it basically benefits everything you do. The fact that it provides an advantage to basically everything is mitigated by the size of the advantage, roughly 1/4 the effect of something more...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for Int

It seems to be pretty commonly held that Int is a bit too much of a dump stat in 5e. I've spent time considering ways to make it more generally attractive without stepping on the toes of other attributes, making anything over- or under-powered, being too finicky, or resulting in too much...

WotC Wants your Feedback On The Revised Ranger

This isn't an MMO, so it doesn't really matter that much if there's mechanical overlap between classes (and as DBW mentions below, it's even sort of desirable to some extent so there's greater flexibility in builds and party comps). All that matters it that a class has a good theme and expresses...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: The ranger, revised... overcompensation?

Interesting updates. I will note that the one major thing that bothered me about Hunters wasn't addressed, and it's the level 11 ability. The choice should not be between Volley or Whirlwind. The choice should be between Volley and Whirlwind combined or something else, probably something more...

Modifying Cleric to be more like Wizard

Yeah, this was pretty much my perception of what went down here as well. As I mentioned in my last response to Celebrim, houseruling and homebrewing are idiosyncratic by nature. When you spend time on this forum reading other people's threads, you should generally expect that what they're...
