As I read it, that entire last paragraph on page PHB 197 only applies to "multiple instances of resistance or vulnerability." This is the bold typed "resistance" referenced in "resistance and vulnerability", not the "resistance" used in the generic description of what a saving throw represents...

I plan to open the discussion along these lines. There is a world of difference between saying "I do it this way instead," and just flat not even bothering to learn the actual rules.

I'm gonna give this a try. I've got a wood elf: 13/17/14/8/13/8. I'm going to start as a fighter and take dueling, so the +2 damage will be there. I'll "rage", but of course it won't have any effect until I switch to barbarian at level 2. Only the DM knows that I'm not an actual barbarian...
