Monk or Assassin, Which do you Dislike?

"Some Guy" happened to be Gary Gygax. It was in response to the popular David Carradine show "Kung Fu" that was going on in the 70s.

    D&D 5E (2014) I Hope I Hate 5e

What, no recommendation for the Wand, SPell, Breath weapon, Poison style saving throw charts? Or system shock % rolls? Or buckets and buckets of random tables to roll (critical hits/fumbles, etc)? Granted, that was more a Rolemaster peeve than a necessarily D&D one.

Monk or Assassin, Which do you Dislike?

Next up on "Why is it called that when it implies x" line of arguments: Barbarian, Fighter. It's called the Assassin because it's another sneaky-class, but has different mechanics than the rogue, therefore needs a name to differentiate it. Also, the assassin is a classic trope in most genres.

    Share Something Cool

I wanted to start a thread of just cool gaming-related links to things you've stumbled across from blogs, forum posts, new gaming aids, advice, etc. Pointing out the diamonds in the internet rough. The intention is for this to be edition (and somewhat system) neutral, but whatever works. First...

    Share something Cool

So I wanted to start a thread on cool 4e material that you've come across in your travels - helping people find diamonds in the internet's rough. Or, just stuff that you really like and want to share with others. It could be a blog post, a monster, or really anything. I've started a mostly...

Monk or Assassin, Which do you Dislike?

The thing that bugs me about issues with the assassin is: why does it matter? Sure, the class is called an assassin, but IMO it's a rare DM that actually gives the PC an assassination contract to carry out. Usually that assassin is in the dungeon with the rest of the PCs stabbing monsters in...

    D&D 3.x 5E solve me this: 3Es and 4Es biggest problem

Yes, that may have happened in the ancient past but it won't in the future.

[Play Report] DMing for Middle/High Schoolers

Sadly we're just waiting for my grandmother to pass away; it's likely in the next week. After the funeral I can depart home. But, thank you for the concern. :)

    D&D 3.x 5E solve me this: 3Es and 4Es biggest problem

D&D will never be a one-book only, never-errata'd/updated game. Never. It's the same reason why there will always be edition turnovers.

Planning to run Age of Worms AP - Anything I should know about before I start?

THere's also a feat that lets you use SA damage on undead (but I think it cuts a percentage down). Be aware the adventure is a real grindfest. Also, the author said that he wanted to marry the adventure to The Rod of Seven Parts, having the Rod be a weapon against Kyuss. You might want to...

Monk or Assassin, Which do you Dislike?

You know, I think there's room for an unarmed brawler, even in Euro-centric fantasy. Hercules did a lot of unarmed fighting, you have Greco-Roman wrestlers, Beowulf took on Grendel unarmed, etc. The problem comes with the Eastern flavor. Understand I enjoy Eastern-flavor and kung fu. But, I...

Looking for gay writers and designer for podcast interview.

Pretty sure the OP is looking for designers/writers of RPG material, not just gamers. :)

    D&D 3.x 5E solve me this: 3Es and 4Es biggest problem

As long as there is player material beyond one book, there will always be DMs saying "now I have to disallow stuff". Hell, there are DMs who say no to core stuff if it differs from the campaign they are running (see: the monk debate, Dark Sun and its divine classes). And there will always be...

Heroes of the Elemental Chaos Excerpts

I'm really eager to find out about the class mechanics. I don't know anything about sha'irs. Likely the sorcerer will just be like the slayer and hexblade (static damage increases per attack), but with single and some area target spells. And the monk build will just be a monk build with...

    Reducing "grind" with monster design

Personally I feel monsters can easily die very quickly, so it's nice to have something stay around a little longer.

    Reducing "grind" with monster design

To be fair, monsters like vampires should have healing effects. It feels appropriate. The same with monsters that have regeneration (like trolls). When it depends on a certain action (vampires have to use a certain attack, trolls can't take certain damage types) then it's informative. But a...

Heroes of the Elemental Chaos Excerpts

Lack of fluff was one of the weakest complaints. It wasn't a dealbreaker, just one on a long list for those who didn't care for 4e. 4e started getting really good fluff around the time of Divine/Primal power. Having had this sort of fluff from the beginning would have been nice though. I...

    Reducing "grind" with monster design

I love the Weakened condition fix. Going in my houserule file. Insubstantial I'm less pleased with. Mainly because it looks like it would slow things down - there's now a threshold (slightly more complicated than just halving or a resistant). Even though I think 'attacking missed allies" is a...
