    D&D 4E JamesonCourage's First 4e Session

Alright, here's some ideas. Usually the Far Realms is used as "It's dangerous because it just is, interacting with it is bad like merely being close to radiation is bad" or occasionally "It wants to because it can/likes to", which is similar to Demons and such. Instead, I propose that the entire...

    D&D 4E JamesonCourage's First 4e Session

Oh oh. If anyone wants Far Realms campaign-wide plots, I got'cha a doozy or two. :D

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

Also the discussion of roleplay/mechanics/whatnots: If I'm a skinny guy, I can pretend to be a beefy barbarian and have rules to let me beat people up. All that I need is the dice. I should also be able to pretend to be a clever-tongued scoundrel even if I, the player, am socially awkward...

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

Oh man, so many. Paranoia. Paranoia is... I actually don't know if there are straight up rules to Paranoia. Hillfolk is Robin Laws' new RPG. The way I've had it explained is that it's sort of like improvising dramatic TV shows, like The Sopronos, House of Cards, Carnivale etc, which are about...

    Creative Dungeon Elements

It's also worth noting that there's nothing wrong with cracking open a module, finding a room (or suite of rooms) you like, and stealing it completely. I have zero problem using Thunderspire Labyrinth's Well of Demons, or a room or two from Pyramid of Shadows, tucked away in a dungeon somewhere...

What are your fav monsters to pit against players in DnD?

Back on topic, I remembered something. Thjere are so many varieties of gnolls in 4e. I think gnolls have the highest number of stat blocks because there's been about 10 Dungeon/Dragon articles, plus they've appeared in almost every monster book. I could run a mini-campaign of nothing but gnolls...

What are your fav monsters to pit against players in DnD?

I haven't ran a 4e game in a while so I forget, but I can think of three reasons. All hinge on the sunrod basically being an alchemical/alchemagical item: 1) Magical magnesium. When it's activated, the sunrod gets very hot, because in order to create that light it must create a lot of heat...

    Creative Dungeon Elements

I think the book Dungeonscape, one of the last books of 3e, had various suggestions of exotic dungeons. Like walls made of slime, etc etc. One suggestion: the insides of an immense creature. Perhaps it's undead, its flesh and bone reshaped, or perhaps it just has a weird honeycomb-like insides...

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

Right, right. I got to feeling argumentative. I appreciate the summation.

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

I didn't specify reflex. THere are fort and will save spells I am sure do half-damage on a miss. Well in my edition they were - all 4e spells are attacks against static defenses. There really aren't any saving throughs. But that's beside the point. Beyond that, IMO they are the same thing...

What are your fav monsters to pit against players in DnD?

Most lurkers have powers that either put them in concealment at the beginning of combat, or put them back into concealment. Invisibility, increased move to put them in darkness, ability to create darkness, burrow, etc. Let's see... *Cracks open MM3* Ghoul Flesh Seeker: can use a stealth...

What are your fav monsters to pit against players in DnD?

It's been about a year since I looked at a statblock; I couldn't name anything specific, so for now: anything that's a Lurker. I just love the "suddenly something is eating your face with high damage" monster. Especially when you hold that lurker in your pocket until the 2nd or 3rd round of...

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

So, I missed the discussion where Damage on a miss Yay/nay came up, and I haven't swam through all the other threads, but I have just a general question. Why is "enemy saves, takes half-damage from spell" acceptable, but "miss with a weapon attack, enemy takes minimal damage" is not? I...

Reading & Running old D&D adventure/delves... Am I missing something?

I'll take a look but I am not the best person to ask on that. :) I'm just in the mood to design some interesting chambers and see people react. Also I know nothing about Mages and Monsters. But I DO see that you are quite attached to Oakhurst. ;)

Pathfinder 1E Do I need a character ahead of time to show up at a PF Society game?

There's a local convention this weekend and 95% of the games are Pathfinder Society games. Do I need to show up with a character in order to play, or do these games come with characters pre-made for this purpose? Because I don't own any PF stuff.

Reading & Running old D&D adventure/delves... Am I missing something?

Not really. I mean, some are "They're hired to do x" or often "They're attacked by group x, and obviously they're going to want to follow up on that". but others are a lot more involved. Adventure paths for instance, all the PCs are raised in this little town and then suddenly x happens! and...

Reading & Running old D&D adventure/delves... Am I missing something?

If by spoon-fed you mean "comes with a story already" then yes. But then for me it's a rare adventure that I would take the existing story and run with it without serious changes. Modules often end up being things to take things from, maps or encounters or an interesting plot seed to be changed...

Do they no longer put all the winners in one PDF? I looked on the site and all the PDF files are of winners individually, not one file with all of them. I know they used to because I have a PDF of 2010 and 2011.

    Help from Game Masters

First of all, one place you might want to try is Meetup.com. It's a website for people to organize all sorts of activity or interest-based groups in your area. So check it and see if there's any gaming groups in your region. As for what with new players? I recommend you read this as a way of...
